Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Unanswered, Unrivaled: After falling behind 3-0 after an inning and a half, Winston-Salem scored 13 unanswered runs in a four-inning stretch to blow past the Lynchburg Hillcats 13-3 on Friday night. The Dash plated two in the second, tied the game with a run in the third, scored four in the fourth, and added six more in the fifth inning to complete the onslaught. Winston improved to 4-0 on the season against Lynchburg and goes for the series victory tonight.
Happy Birthday, Kenny Williams, Jr.: Today is Dash OF Kenny Williams, Jr.'s 24th birthday. Kenny has been on the disabled list since April 29 with a knee injury he suffered trying to make a sliding catch. Williams, who appears to be close to returning to game action, was hitting .233 with one home run and seven RBI prior to the injury.
Best Record Watch: With last night's win, the Dash has tied the low-A Lake County Captains for the best record in all of minor league baseball. Only the Tampa Bay Rays (30-12) have a better record among professional affiliated teams.
Bats Bounce Back: The Dash scored 13 runs last night, almost double what they had in the entire series against the Pelicans. Winston scored just seven times in the four-game set with Myrtle Beach.
Sauer Turns Sweet: Last night's game did not start ideally for Dash starter Stephen Sauer. He allowed three runs on seven hits in the first two innings before settling down. Sauer ended up going seven innings in a game for the second time all season, and only allowed four meaningless singles over his last five frames. It was Sauer's third win in as many starts and he improved his record to 4-1.
Kloess-ing it Out: Brandon Kloess, the newest Dash pitcher, made a successful Advanced-A debut last night, flashing a plus slider en route to a pair of scoreless innings to finish out the game. It marked the second straight game that Winston only had to use one reliever after emptying the bullpen during Wednesday's 29 innings of baseball.
Pitching Picking up: The Dash pitching staff is rounding into form after struggling at times earlier in the month. The starters have pitched into the sixth inning in each of the last seven ballgames and the team has posted a collective 1.77 ERA during the home stand. The team ERA stands at 3.61, second in the Carolina League this season.
Cats Can't Catch: In the four games Winston-Salem and Lynchburg have played this season, shaky Hillcats defense has been a constant. Lynchburg has committed eight errors against Winston, and 13 of the 32 runs the Dash has scored against the Hillcats have been unearned. Four of the Dash's runs last night were unearned against James Avery.
Best Bats East of Roswell: The Dash's season batting average stands at .304, the second best mark in the majors or minors. Only the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes have a better average (.309). Winston's average is still the best in the Carolina League by 29 points (Lynchburg is the closest with a .275 average). Winston has four players in the top ten in the league in batting average: Brandon Short (2nd, .371), Jon Gilmore (4th, .341), Justin Greene (6th, .336), and Drew Garcia (9th, .323). The team's 267 runs are the most of any team, majors or minors.
Iron Man 2: Only three players in the Carolina League have played every game and two of them are on the Dash. Justin Greene and Brandon Short have been Winston-Salem's iron men, playing in all 42 games this season. Wilmington's Eric Hosmer has also played every game in 2010.
Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Lance Janke (1-3, 5.46) makes his third start of the season and his first against the Dash. He has been mostly used as a reliever this season, including an appearance against Winston-Salem last weekend, during which he went three scoreless innings in Lynchburg. A San Diego-area native, Janke is in his third professional season after being drafted by the Reds in the 14th round in 2008. The right-hander split 2009 with low-A Dayton and high-A Sarasota, going 5-10 with a 3.98 ERA in 26 games (21 starts). Janke played collegiately at Grossmont College and San Diego Christian College before he was drafted by Cincinnati. He attended high school at University of San Diego High School, a Catholic prep school in San Diego. It is the alma mater of many famous athletes, including major leaguers Carlos Quentin, Barry Zito, and Mark Prior. Other USDHS grads include golfer Phil Mickelson, Los Angeles Laker Luke Walton, and Academy Award-winning director Cameron Crowe.
