Julius' Heroics Propels Keys In Rain

On a rainy night in Frederick, the Keys and Indians started an hour and 33 minutes later than expected. Showers continued throughout the game but that did not affect LF Jacob Julius. Julius, who batted leadoff for the first time this season, was the hero of the night. He drove home both of Frederick's runs in the Keys 2-1 victory over Kinston. With the win, Frederick improved to 26-17 on the season while Kinston fell to 22-21.

RHP Ryan Berry made his first Carolina League start on Saturday night. He pitched effectively as he went four innings allowing one run on three hits. Berry struck out three and walked four on the evening.

The Indians scored their first run in the third inning off of Berry. With one out and runners on the corners, DH Doug Pickens hit a groundball to short. Bobby Stevens threw to second for one out but the Jason Kipnis slide took out 2B Mike Mooney and he could not make the throw to first. CF Jordan Henry scored on the fielders' choice to give Kinston a one-run advantage.

The Indians' lead would be short lived as Frederick would tie it up in the bottom of the third.

Stevens led off the inning with a single. With DH Buck Britton at bat, Stevens stole second. That proved to be critical for Frederick. After Britton and C Luis Bernardo were retired RF Jacob Julius came through with his first clutch hit of the night. Julius lined the T.J. House offering down the rightfield line for a RBI double.

Both bullpens pitched stellar as neither team scored a run until the bottom of the eighth inning.

With one down in the bottom of the eighth, Julius hit a towering shot off RHP David Roberts. Julius' second homerun of the season gave the Keys the lead for good at 2-1.

RHP Jose Diaz picked up his third save of the save throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

Frederick's bullpen was stellar once again. RHP Brett Jacobson, RHP Raul Rivero, and Diaz combine to throw five shutout innings. So far in the series, the Keys' pen has thrown 12 scoreless innings.

Sunday afternoon will be the rubbermatch of the three-game series between Frederick and Kinston. RHP Ryan O'Shea (3-2, 4.42) will start for the Keys while RHP Marty Popham will make his Kinston Indian debut. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. on the First annual Biker Day at Harry Grove Stadium. Along with Biker Day, Sunday is also Community Safety Awareness Night.
