WINSTON-SALEM DASH (6-5, 36-44) vs. CAROLINA MUDCATS (6-5, 35-43)
RHP Terance Marin (1-0, 4.09 ERA) vs. RHP Adam Plutko (1-2, 3.94 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #81 (Home Game #40)
MUDCATS EDGE DASH AGAIN SUNDAY The Dash trimmed a three-run deficit to one, but the Carolina Mudcats claimed a 5-4 victory on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem starter Tony Bucciferro worked through seven innings, but he gave up all five runs (four earned) in his sixth loss of the campaign. The Muddies seized the lead for good thanks to a four-run second, during which Jeremy Lucas hit a two-run homer. Thus, the Dash have dropped back-to-back games after a season high-tying four-game win streak from Tuesday to Friday.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Outfielder Jacob May was named the Carolina League's Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. He becomes the fourth Dash player to earn a weekly award, joining right-hander Frank Montas (May 26-June 1), righty Myles Jaye (June 19-25) and outfielder Jason Coats (June 2-8). This week, May hit .533 (16-for-30) with 12 runs scored and nine stolen bases. This batting average was tied for sixth in all of Minor League Baseball and tops in High-A, while he owns a share of the Minor League lead in runs and swipes.
ANOTHER DOUBLE-DIGIT RUN? With a hit Monday, May would register his third hitting streak of 10 or more games. During this run, which began June 21, May is hitting .474 (18-for-38) with 14 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. After posting a .204 mark through the end of May, the Ohioan has hit .378 with 27 runs scored and 20 stolen bases this month. This run total is one run shy of the highest in the Minors (Conrad Gregor of High-A Lancaster), while he paces the Minor Leagues in stolen bases.
ANOTHER NINE Both May and Joey DeMichele have hit safely in nine consecutive contests. During DeMichele's season-long run, he is hitting .343 (12-for-35) with six RBIs and three runs scored. Winston hitters have banged out five hitting streaks of 10 or more games thus far this season.
A RARE SWEEP CHANCE This marks the 96th series in BB&T Ballpark's four-and-a-half year history, and Winston-Salem has only suffered two home sweeps since the downtown facility opened. The Dash avoided a home brooming in their first 81 series at BB&T Ballpark before Salem rattled off three straight over Winston from August 14-16, 2013. Frederick also accomplished the feat in a rain-altered three-game set on April 16-17 of this season. At BB&T Ballpark, the Dash boast an all-time record of 189-130 (.574), even though the club is 18-20 at home in 2014.
EVEN MORE SURPRISING What makes this series even more surprising is that BB&T Ballpark has not been kind to Cleveland's Carolina League club. The Dash are 35-12 (.745) versus either defunct Kinston (2010-11) or Carolina (2012-present) inside BB&T Ballpark. In recent meetings, however, the Mudcats have been able to tweak the trend. Dating back to July of last season, Carolina is 6-3 in Winston-Salem after the Dash earned 32 of the previous 38 meetings in the Triad.
ONE OF THE BEST DUOS Winston-Salem outfielder Courtney Hawkins and Jason Coats are in the top five in the Carolina League in both home runs and RBIs. Hawkins is second with 13 long balls, while his 59 RBIs are atop the circuit and fifth in High-A baseball. Coats has gone yard 12 times, gives him a share of third place in the CL, while he is tied for second with 51 RBIs.
DASH DOTS After Monday's finale with Carolina, the Dash will travel to Myrtle Beach for a three-game set against the first-place Pelicans, who won five of their six games against Winston-Salem in the first half...One game after tying a season high with 17 hits, the Dash only mustered five hits in Sunday's loss...The Dash are second in Minor League Baseball with 124 errors, while they pace the Minors with 108 unearned runs.
