Frederick Keys News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Frederick Keys built a 9-0 lead after two innings only to see it evaporate before Michael Burgess launched a home run in the top of the ninth to send the Keys home with a 10-9 victory at Pfitzner Stadium on Monday.
The Keys piled eight runs on the board in the top of the first against Potomac starter Blake Schwartz and reliever Kylin Turnbull. Burgess roped a bases loaded double down the right field line to make it 3-0, and Brenden Webb, Jerome Pena, Mike Yastrzemski, and Tucker Nathans all had at least one RBI in the inning to stake the visitors to an early cushion. Pena doubled home two runs as the ninth batter in the order, and both Yastrzemski and Nathans recorded two hits in the frame.
The Keys knocked Schawrtz out after 2/3 of an inning, as the starter gave up six runs, while Turnbull gave up the final two in the first inning. Frederick would score a run in the second on a Webb bounce out, his second RBI of the game, but they wouldn't plate another run until the ninth.
Dennis Torres started for the first time in his professional career for the Keys and lasted three innings. He gave up five hits, three in his last inning, and two runs (one earned). He was aided by two twin-killings to end the first and second. Potomac started its comeback in the third, and scored at least one run from the third to seventh inning.
In the fourth, Matt Hobgood entered and allowed two runs on two knocks. A leadoff single by Randolph Oduber was followed by a pair of walks. Will Piwnica-Worms grounded into Potomac's third double play to drive in a run, and Estarlin Martinez brought home another for a 9-4 Keys edge.
Hobgood would throw in the fifth as well, and two wild pitches scored Oscar Tejeda and Tony Renda. Hobgood tossed two innings, allowed four runs on three hits, and chucked four wild pitches. After the fifth, Potomac trailed 9-6.
Right-hander Gene Escat toed the rubber for the Keys in the sixth and served up a leadoff solo homer to Piwnica-Worms to cut the Keys lead to 9-7. In the seventh against Escat, a walk to Stephen Perez and base hit by Tejeda placed runners on first and second. Oduber attempted a sacrifice bunt, but he reached after Escat bobbled the placement. With the bases loaded, Escat walked Mike McQuillan to make it 9-8 Keys. He then induced Khayyan Norfork into a foul out to first and struck out Piwnica-Worms. However, Martinez knocked an infield single to Adrian Marin at short. Martinez beat the throw, but first baseman Trey Mancini threw to the plate and got Oduber, who was trying to score the go-ahead run, for the third out of the inning.
Jesse Beal (1-1), stranded the bases loaded in the eighth by striking out McQuillan. Burgess homered off Travis Henke (3-1) on the first pitch of the ninth inning to right-center field, off the third-level of billboard. Beal was able to strand the tying run on base in the ninth to win for the first time this season.
The Keys win just their second rubber match of the season and gain a game on first-place Lynchburg in the Northern Division. Frederick (35-44, 3-9) returns home tomorrow to face off against Salem at 7 p.m. Keys starter is TBA while Salem will throw RHP Joe Gunkel (1-0, 2.38).
