Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA. (JUNE 30, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, never trailed in a 9-6 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday night at Calvin Falwell Field. Jorge Alfaro singled the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and the Pelicans smacked eight extra-base hits to win the series in the three-game set finale.
Nick Vickerson provided the first run of the ballgame with a line drive home run to left. The home run was his sixth this season and second with the Pelicans. It was the first hit allowed by Lynchburg hurler Wes Parsons who allowed six in total, five of which went for extra bases.
The Pelicans (7-4, 51-28) clubbed three straight extra-base hits with one out in the second inning. Kevin Torres and Chris Garia knocked consecutive triples, Garia's league-leading tenth and most in the Carolina League since 2009, to bring across the first run. Hanser Alberto doubled home Garia with a line drive to center, putting Myrtle Beach ahead 3-0.
Sam Wolff tossed two scoreless and hitless innings before getting tagged for two runs in the third. A four hit inning with three singles, including an infield hit, brought the Hillcats within one run.
Myrtle Beach regained a two-run edge in the following half inning. Christopher Bostick produced the run nearly single-handedly. He worked a one-out walk, stole second, and came home stealing third and advancing to the plate on a throwing error from Hillcats catcher Tyler Tewell.
Tewell got a run back for his club in the bottom of the fourth. He launched his first of two home runs, the first going over the center field fence, to bring the game back to 4-3.
But Lynchburg (7-4, 41-40) allowed two more runs in the fifth. Nick Williams hit his first of two doubles to bring home Garia for one, and Preston Beck beat out a potential inning-ending double-play ball to score a second run. At 6-3, the Pelicans matched their largest lead of the night.
The lead did not last through the fifth. In Wolff's final frame, he surrendered three runs, including a second home run from Tewell, this time a two-run bomb to right field. The big inning tied the ballgame.
Wolff allowed a season-high six runs, all earned, on a season-most nine hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out one. The bullpen kept the Hillcats quiet the rest of the way, however.
Martire Garcia fired three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, an infield single, with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
The Pelicans made him the winning pitcher by taking the lead in the seventh. Williams smashed his second double of the night to open the frame. Alfaro pulled a single to left to bring Williams to the plate. The go-ahead RBI put the Birds on top 7-6. Beck picked up his third double of the series to plate Williams and increase the lead to two runs.
Torres brought around a ninth run with an eighth-inning double, his second extra-base knock of the night. He has hit safely in seven straight games.
Jose Leclerc worked a clean ninth with a strikeout to close things out, picking up his seventh save in eight chances. Garcia (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Zach Jadofsky (3-3), who allowed the two seventh-inning runs, suffered the defeat.
With the series win in the books, the Pelicans make the trek back to Myrtle Beach to host the Winston-Salem Dash for three games at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The series begins Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Andrew Faulkner (5-1, 2.44) makes the start in game one of the set opposite Dash southpaw Jefferson Olacio (0-3, 4.95). The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m.
