Barnum, Marin Help Dash Avoid Rare Home Sweep

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 30, 2014) - Terance Marin tossed a career-high eight shutout innings, and Keon Barnum matched a career high with four hits in Winston-Salem's 3-0 victory over the Carolina Mudcats at BB&T Ballpark on Monday night.
Marin (2-0) surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out four in his eight innings of work. He retired the last 13 batters he faced in setting a new career-best for innings pitched, surpassing his previous high of seven innings against Salem on June 20.
Since returning to Winston-Salem from independent baseball, Marin has given up just one run in 19 innings of work, which calculates to a 0.47 earned run average.
The Dash (7-5, 37-44) opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth against Carolina (6-6, 35-44) starter Adam Plutko (1-3). Jason Coats led off the inning with a homer to left-center field, reaching the Foothills Brew Pen for his 13th long ball of the season. This total is tied for second in the Carolina League with teammate Courtney Hawkins.
Winston-Salem continued its rally when Barnum doubled to right field and scored on Omar Narvaez's single to left, giving the home team a 2-0 lead.
Barnum provided some insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning, blasting his sixth homer of the year to left-center field for a 3-0 Dash advantage. Barnum has now hit six home runs this season, and he hit .333 in the month of June.
Carolina made a final push in the top of the ninth against Winston-Salem reliever Kyle Hansen. Yhoxian Medina and Joe Sever delivered back-to-back singles to open the inning, and Jeremy Lucas drew a one-out walk to load the bases. The right-hander escaped the jam by retiring the last two men he faced to record his first save of the season.
With the win, the Dash avoided a rare home sweep. Since the BB&T Ballpark opened in 2010, Winston-Salem was only swept twice--by Salem in a three-game series from August 14-16, 2013, and in a rain-altered three-game set against Frederick on April 16-17.
The Dash will hit the road for a three-game series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beginning Tuesday night. Winston-Salem will send left-hander Jefferson Olacio (0-3, 4.95 ERA) to the mound, while the Pelicans counter with lefty Andrew Faulkner (5-1, 2.44 ERA).
