Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - Winston-Salem and Lynchburg split a doubleheader with the Warthogs rallying for a 3-2 in game one and the Hillcats hanging on to a 4-3 victory in game two. In the opener, Rod Allen Jr. came up with the big hit when he delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put Winston-Salem in front 3-2. Jon Link retired the final three batters in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win and collect his first save since joining the Warthogs. Lynchburg rode a strong start from Serguey Linares in the nightcap, but Winston-Salem scored two runs against the Lynchburg bullpen in the final inning before falling short.
Lynchburg jumped in front with a pair of runs in the first inning in game one. Angel Gonzalez walked to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Brad Corley. With runners on the corners, Jamie Romak delivered an RBI double that scored Gonzalez. A passed ball charged to Warthogs catcher Matt Sharp allowed Corley to score, giving Lynchburg a 2-0 lead. Winston-Salem cut the lead in half when Paulo Orlando lined a double off the left field wall that scored Stefan Gartrell from first base with the Warthogs first run.
Winston-Salem starting pitcher Fautino De Los Santos settled down after allowing two runs in the first inning to retire 12 in row, including six strikeouts to keep the Warthogs deficit at one run. He worked 5 2/3 innings and only allowed one earned run with 8 strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. Winston-Salem reliever Ryan Rodriguez (4-7) retired the final batter in the sixth inning to collect the win
Lynchburg starter Derek Hankins tossed 5 1/3 innings and held the Warthogs to one run on three hits, but did not factor in the decision either. Matt Swanson (2-6) came out of the bullpen and tossed 1 2/3 innings, but gave up the go-ahead runs in the final frame for the loss.
In the nightcap, Winston-Salem grabbed the early lead when Robbie Hudson scored from second base on a bloop single by Gartrell in the first inning to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. Lynchburg answered back with a pair of runs in the second inning on RBI hits from Ron Davenport and Denny Nino to take a 2-1 advantage. A two-run homerun by Jamie Romak in the third inning put the Hillcats in front 4-1.
The Warthogs loaded the bases in the seventh inning with two outs and pinch-hitter Javier Castillo lined a two-run single off the pitcher to bring Winston-Salem within a run. But with two runners on base, Lynchburg reliever Luis Valdez struck out Paulo Orlando to end the game and collect his fifth save of the season. Linares (5-6) tossed five innings and held Winston-Salem to one run on four hits to earn the win. Clayton Richard (8-11) got the start for the Warthogs and tossed a complete game, but allowed four runs on nine hits to take the loss.
The Warthogs and Hillcats will square off in the third contest of this four-game series on Wednesday, August 22 at Calvin Falwell Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM with RHP Derek Rodriguez (11-5, 4.00) taking the mound for Winston-Salem. Lynchburg will hand the ball to southpaw Kyle Bloom (9-10, 4.93).
