Avs and Keys suspended in ninth

August 21, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Frederick, MD-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, came back from three down at the outset of the ninth inning to tie the Frederick Keys Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Then, the rain came and suspended the game in the home half of the inning with one out and the score at 5-5. The remainder will be played starting at 5:30 with the regularly scheduled game starting 30 minutes after.

Salem accrued just two runs against Frederick starter Brad Bergesen in eight innings. The Keys called upon reliever Jason Burch for the ninth. He allowed a single to Ryan Reed to open the frame followed by a Cesar Quintero double to left. After Chris Johnson struck out, Jose Lopez's sacrifice fly made the score 5-3. Wladimir Sutil earned a walk on a 3-2 pitch and then stole second to put two on in scoring position for Tim Torres. The switch hitter lobbed a ball into center that scored both runners and tied the game.

In the home portion of the ninth, Brent Krause flied out against Rory Shortell in a steady rain and Brian Bock walked as the precipitation increased. As Jake Duncan replaced Bock on the basepath and Zach Dillon was announced as a pinch-hitter for Jedidiah Stephen, the rain became too much and the game was halted.

Six on the ten runs in the game were scored in the first two innings. After a Mitch Einertson RBI groundout in the first, Frederick jumped for three in the bottom of the inning against Polin Trinidad and two more in the second.

The game is the first unfinished and suspended for the Avalanche this season. Upon the conclusion of that contest (and a half hour break), the Avs will throw lefty Chris Salamida against Frederick's Chorye Spoone.
