Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored a total of eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings Sunday night to bolt past visiting Winston-Salem 9-6 on LewisGale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Pat Osborn and Mitch Einertson combined for six hits and four runs in the win. Winston-Salem (19-34) held the lead 4-0 as the bottom of the fourth inning began. Salem (29-27) began the frame with an Einertson single to left. Osborn followed with a double to right that scored Einertson. The next batter, Orlando Rosales reached on an error by the second baseman Robby Hudson that scored Osborn. After Ryan Reed walked on four pitches, Billy Hart pushed a sacrifice bunt to third base. Javier Castillo threw the ball to first in the direction of Hudson. The second baseman did not see the ball and it whizzed down the right field line. Both Reed and Rosales scored. Next, Jose Lopez punched an RBI single and Salem held a 5-4 lead. The next inning, Einertson opened the offensive with another single and Osborn followed with one of his own. After a popout and a strikeout, Billy Hart walked to load the bases. Jose Lopez subsequently cracked a two-run single for a 7-4 lead. The final run crossed on an RBI single from Cesar Quintero. Salem's final run came across in the seventh inning after Winston-Salem plated one in the top of the sixth. Cesar Quintero sliced a ball down the right field line that scored Billy Hart and went as a double for the left fielder. Winston-Salem tapped the Avs bullpen for a run in the eighth, but Chris Blazek put the Warthogs down consecutively in the ninth to secure his seventh save in as many attempts.
Down the stretch they come: Both Salem and Myrtle Beach were off yesterday, so Salem opens play today two games ahead of Myrtle for the final Southern Division playoff spot. Each team picked a half game up on first-place Kinston as the Indians lost at home against Potomac. The Avalanche is now four and a half games from first place with 14 to play.
Road is where the heart is: The Avalanche has charted an 11-day course from Frederick to Winston-Salem and Wilmington. Salem will be gone from the 21st of August until September 1st. When the journey is over, the Avalanche will have traveled 1148.41 miles (according to the fine folks at Mapquest).
Second-time hurler: Lefty Polin Trinidad takes to the mound tonight for the Avalanche after a superb opening in the Carolina League Wednesday. He came one out shy of a doubleheader complete game in Kinston. Trinidad, the organization's strikeout leader, fanned seven and did not walk a batter.
Helpful hands: The Warthogs committed three errors Sunday night in the finale in Salem. The Avalanche is 30-7 this season when the opposition makes at least two errors.
1c: Avalanche left-hander Chris Blazek finished the game Sunday for his seventh save in seven tries this season. Salem's two previous closers, Sammy Gervacio and Ryan McKeller have been promoted to AA. Blazek has not allowed a run since a July 25th loss to Wilmington. In his last 10 appearances (12 innings), Blazek has allowed just four hits and walked four while striking 10 out.
