Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Gary SouthShore RailCats dropped a 13-inning decision to the Winnipeg Goldeyes by the count of 7-6 in the longest game of the year for both clubs which featured 11 pitchers and 31 hits combined.
Winnipeg scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 12th to keep the game alive when Alan Rick registered a two-out two-run single. The RailCats had taken the lead with two in the top of the inning as Mike Rohde singled home Cristian Guerrero and Mike Valadez dropped down a safety squeeze. The Goldeyes won the game as Bryan Myrow logged his fourth hit of the night, a two-out single off of Brian Grening to plate Price Kendall with the winning run.
Chris Carrara doubled with one out in the top of the third to help the RailCats open a 1-0 lead. Carrara moved to third on an Adam Klein single and scored when Mike Massaro legged out the return throw on a fielder's choice. Winnipeg tied the game in similar fashion in the bottom of the fourth. Wes Long led off the frame with a single and scored the tying run on a double play ball.
The Goldeyes nabbed the lead for the first time in the sixth inning when Long doubled home Kaiser. The back and forth contest evened up again on a double from Adam Klein in the top of the seventh which brought in Carrara. Winnipeg answered with two in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.
The RailCats managed unearned runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game against Winnipeg closer Jamie Vermilyea. Guerrero reached on an error in the eighth and scored as Rohde doubled in his first run. Carrara opened the ninth with a walk and was sacrificed to second before Massaro reached on an error that allowed Carrara to cross the plate. The bullpen gave the RailCats opportunities, slamming the door in the ninth and 10th innings as the Goldeyes left the bases loaded against Chris Chavez in the ninth and trapped the winning run at second in the 10th against David Nathanson.
Lost in the wildness of the 4:20 night was the fourth consecutive quality start by a RailCats hurler. Nolan Nicholson pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just three runs on seven hits. The RailCats amassed 14 hits in the game with all but one member of the lineup recording at least one hit. Klein posted three hits while Boyer, Guerrero, Rohde, and Carrara clocked in two apiece.
The rubber match of the series is tomorrow afternoon at Shaw Park. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. with LHP Derrick Gordon (0-1, 2.65) on the hill for the RailCats. Winnipeg counters with RHP Ace Walker (0-1, 4.58).
