SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries rallied in the late innings, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes were able to hold them off as the Birds fell 12-8 in a roller coaster game on Monday night.

Sioux Falls starter Kris Regas struggled in his ninth start of the season, allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked three, and struck out two in only 4.2 innings of work.

The Canaries actually scored first on Monday. Darwin Perez reached on a one-out double, and came around to score on a David Bergin RBI double to give the Birds an early 1-0 lead.

That lead would be short-lived. In a half-hour long top of the second, the Goldeyes sent eleven men to the plate, five of whom scored. The Goldeyes offense was aided by a fielding error and a throwing error, both on the third baseman, allowing four unearned runs to score in the inning.

Carlton Tanabe hit a leadoff homer in the fourth to push the lead to 6-1. David Rohm then roped a RBI double to the gap in left to bring home Winnipeg's seventh run of the day in the top of the fifth.

The Birds found some life in the bottom of the sixth. Blake Schmit hit a one-out single, then advanced to second on a J.C. Linares walk. Cameron Monger then tagged a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left to cut the deficit to three at 7-4.

Things got interesting in the eighth. The Goldeyes put up two runs in the inning to push their lead to 9-4. Reggie Abercrombie stepped up to the plate with two away and took exception to a Madison Boer offering that tailed up and in around his head. After he struck out swinging, he immediately headed out toward the mound to confront Boer. Catcher Mike Falsetti then shoved Abercrombie, sparking a benches-clearing brawl. After the dust settled, the Canaries lost Falsetti and Manager Shelby Ford due to ejections, but gained an emotional boost.

The Birds used that boost to battle back in the eighth. The Canaries loaded the bases courtesy of a single, walk, and error. B.J. Guinn then cleared the bases with one swing of the bat, a bases-clearing double to the right field corner to cut the lead to 9-7. Guinn then came home on a Michael Pair RBI single to make it a one run ballgame at 9-8.

The bullpen fell apart in the top of the ninth. The Goldeyes pushed their lead back out to four in the inning, courtesy of two bases-loaded walks and a run-scoring wild pitch, making it a 12-8 game.

Winnipeg reliever Eric Eadington came in and shut the door on the Canaries' final comeback hopes, shutting the Birds down 1-2-3 in the ninth.

The Canaries face off against the Goldeyes in game two of their three-game series on Tuesday night. Dylan Thompson takes the mound on Tuesday for the Birds and will face lefty Ethan Carnes.
