Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The St. Paul Saints (50-23) slapped 11 singles and made just one error to defeat the Gary SouthShore RailCats (37-37) 5-2 at US Steel Yard.

The Saints jumped on RailCats starting pitcher Richard Castillo in the 1st inning to score three runs on four hits. St. Paul scored two runs before Castillo was able to retire his first batter of the game, Bryson Myles who struck out. The inning included a bloop single and a pop fly that fell between left fielder Reggie Wilson and shortstop Jarred Mederos.

The RailCats threatened in the bottom of the 1st but Saints starter John Straka pitched out of the jam. Cameron Newell started the frame with a walk before Wilson and Anthony Cheky followed with singles. Then, Straka went to work and struck out Tillman Pugh, got Jaime Del Valle to fly out and induced a groundout from Alex Crosby.

Gary SouthShore was able to convert a base runner into a run in the 3rd inning. Wilson led off with an infield single and stole second base. He moved to third base on a Cheky groundout and scored on a fielder's choice from Pugh.

The Saints added another run in the 4th inning to make it 4-1. Breland Almadova scored after singling and coming around on an Alonzo Harris fielder's choice. St. Paul added their final run in the 8th inning off of Paul Perez in his RailCats debut.

The Cats ramped up the offense one last time in the bottom of the 8th. Cheky doubled to right field and stole third base. Pugh came through with another RBI on a fielder's choice to bring the score to 5-2.

Wilson, Cheky and EJ Devarie had multi-hit days for the RailCats who managed nine hits. The RailCats left eight runners on base. The team fell to .500 for the first time since June 19th when they were 15-15. The Cats' division rivals, the Lincoln Saltdogs and Sioux City X's, both lost so the standings remain unchanged.
