Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Wichita Wingnuts fell in an early hole that they could not dig out of, dropping the opener of their three-game set with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-2 Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The RedHawks (36-37) wasted no time in taking the lead, as Kes Carter took Garrett Gould (0-1) deep on the second pitch of the first inning to put the home team up 1-0.
Fargo then tacked on four more in the second. Former Wingnut Dustin Geiger hit a two-run shot, Ryan Pineda added an RBI single, and an error allowed the final tally of the frame to score, putting the RedHawks up by five.
The lead ballooned to seven in the third. Geiger was at it again against his former teammates, driving in his third run of the evening with a double. Brian Humphries then followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.
The seven runs were plenty for Tyler Alexander (9-3) who kept the Wingnuts (46-27) quiet for the majority of the night. The southpaw shutout Wichita over eight innings, and whiffed a season-high 13.
Wichita broke the shutout with two outs in the ninth, as Brennen Salgado doubled in a pair, giving him four multi-hit games in his last five.
In relief of Gould, who was knocked from the game due to injury in the second, Jesse Pratt worked a career-high seven innings out of the Wingnuts bullpen. The righty kept Fargo off the board for the final five innings of his night, and retired the last eight he faced, while striking out a career-high six.
The Wingnuts and RedHawks continue their three-game series Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Veteran right-hander Tim Brown (6-2, 4.81) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Fargo will turn to fellow righty Brian Ernst (1-2, 3.72). First pitch is set for 7:02, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
