Everett AquaSox News Release
HILLSBORO, OR: The Everett AquaSox (26-29) struck for three first inning runs which was all the pitching staff needed on the way to their sixth straight win, defeating the Hillsboro Hops (26-28), 5-2.
Spencer Packard led off the game with his ninth home run of the season, taking Jamison Hill's fourth pitch over the right field fence. James Parker came up five batters later with the bases loaded and singled into left field scoring Alberto Rodriguez. Charlie Welch went from second base to third on the hit and was initially held up until Hops left fielder Danny Oriente bobbled the ball, at which point AquaSox Third Base Coach Jose Umbria waived Welch home for another run and the Sox led 3-0 after the opening frame. Cole Barr's fourth inning sacrifice fly into center field allowed Justin Lavey to tag up from third base, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Hillsboro cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning when both Caleb Roberts and Oriente each picked up an RBI on back-to-back ground outs to shortstop Noelvi Marte, scoring Ryan Bliss and Neyfy Castillo and the score was 4-2 after five innings.
Marte singled home Lavey in the sixth inning for the game's final run and the Sox bullpen did the rest as the AquaSox won their season high sixth straight game, their seventh straight road game and their tenth consecutive game against Hillsboro.
Juan Mercedes pitched his third consecutive scoreless outing, going three innings, allowing only a Tim Tawa bloop leadoff single at the beginning of the game (Tawa was then retired one batter later on a double play), zero walks and four strikeouts, facing the minimal nine batters. Mercedes left the ballgame after being struck by a Spencer Brickhouse line drive to end the third inning; a play Mercedes trapped against his body for the final out of the inning.
AquaSox relief pitchers Blake Townsend, Leon Hunter Jr. and Isaiah Campbell combined to close out the game with four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Sox have outscored their opponents 38-13 during the current six game winning streak, including outscoring Hillsboro 33-12 over the first five games of the series.
The final game of the six-game series is scheduled for Sunday June 12 and will be a rematch of two pitchers that both started the first game of the series back on June 7, a 7-1 AquaSox victory. RHP Prelander Berroa (1-2, 2.18 ERA overall and 1-2 3.20 ERA in five starts for the AquaSox) will start for the Everett and RHP Scott Randall (2-2, 4.54 ERA) will start for Hillsboro. The game can be heard on 1380 AM/95.3 FM KRKO. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. with the pregame show beginning at 12:50 p.m.
