Everett AquaSox News Release
HILLSBORO, OR: A six-run sixth inning vaulted the Everett AquaSox (25-29) into the lead as they overcame a three-run deficit on the way to their fifth straight victory, defeating the Hillsboro Hops (26-27), 9-3 on a rain-soaked Friday afternoon.
Hillsboro catcher Adrian Del Castillo drove in the game's first three runs with a two-run home run in the third inning and later had a RBI double in fifth inning double.
The AquaSox struggled to get anything going early as Hops starting pitcher Ross Carver held the Sox scoreless with only one hit through the first five innings. That all changed however in the sixth inning. Noelvi Marte hit his sixth home run of the season, a one out solo shot over the left field fence to put the AquaSox on the board, cutting the Hops lead to 3-1. The next three AquaSox hitters all reached base safely as Andy Thomas singled, followed by back to back walks to Alberto Rodriguez and Dariel Gomez. Carver's day then came to an end as the Hops went to the bullpen for the first time, bringing in Dillon Larsen. Larsen walked the first batter that he faced, James Parker, forcing home Thomas for a 3-2 score. The next batter was Trent Tingelstad who hit the first pitch of the at bat over the head of centerfielder Tim Tawa for a three run double, scoring Rodriguez, Gomez and Parker for the AquaSox first lead of the game, 5-3. Tingelstad would then score two batters later when Justin Lavey doubled into right field for the 6-3 lead.
The AquaSox added on another run in the seventh inning when Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch by Bobby Ay, making it a 7-3 game. The Sox wrapped up the scoring with two more insurance runs in the ninth inning when Marte scored on a Gomez single followed by another Parker bases loaded walk that scored Thomas.
The AquaSox bullpen of Jarod Bayless, Evan Johnson and Brendan McGuigan combined to throw 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, five walks and seven strikeouts. Johnson has not allowed a run in nine straight appearances. He has pitched 13 scoreless innings beginning on April 30th, allowing only three hits, eight walks and striking out 16, lower his ERA from 8.31 to 3.32 during that stretch.
Tingelstad finished the game two-for-five with two doubles, one run scored and three RBI. The also had a double in his final at bat of the previous game giving him three doubles in his last six at bats.
The five-game winning streak matches a season high for the AquaSox. The other streak occurred when they swept Hillsboro in five games in Everett from May 18 through May 22 . The Sox have outscored their opponents 33-11 during the current streak. The win was also the Sox sixth straight road win and their ninth straight win against Hillsboro.
Game five of the six game series is scheduled for Saturday June 10. RHP Juan Mercedes (3-3, 3.86 ERA) will start for the AquaSox and RHP Jamison Hill (1-3, 2.95 ERA) will start for Hillsboro. Mercedes has been outstanding in his last two starts, pitching 12 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, two walks and 14 strikeouts including a seven inning no hitter in Everett on May 31. The game can be heard on 1380 AM/95.3 FM KRKO. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the pregame show beginning at 6:50 p.m.
