Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The Wings head to Buffalo and Scranton before returning home to host Syracuse May 15.
In the bottom half of the first inning, Jake Cave got things going for the Wings after reaching safely on a hard hit ball that caromed off Lehigh Valley's starting pitcher Jake Waguespack. Kennys Vargas extended the inning after smoking a ball through the left side of the infield which moved Cave to third. Cave came around to score when Waguespack threw a wild pitch to Brock Stassi the next at bat. After a walk to Stassi, Willians Astudillo stepped up to the plate and hit a single to right to load the bases. Taylor Featherston followed up with a bases-clearing double down the right field line to give the Wings a 4-0 lead after the first.
Wings starter Stephen Gonsalves made his second start after being promoted from Double-A Chattanooga, and did not allow a baserunner through the first four innings Sunday. He fanned the side in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Wings threatened again after Waguespack allowed a pair of walks to begin the inning. Waguespack was chased out of the game after going 3.0 innings allowing six runs on six hits while striking out five and walking three. Following a strikeout, IronPigs reliever Tom Windle walked Jermaine Curtis to load the bases. Leonardo Reginatto then stepped to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly which plated both Featherston and Ramsey.
In the top of the fifth the IronPigs got their first hit of the ball game off Gonsalves on a solo home run from Mitch Walding. That would be all the visitors would get in the inning though as Gonsalves got a grounder to get out of the inning maintaining a 6-1 lead for the Wings.
Gonsalves was dominant on the mound, going 6.2 innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out nine and walking just one. Gonsalves threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes. He was perfect through 5.2 innings, not allowing a single IronPig on base.
Nick Anderson relieved Gonsalves, and turned in 2.1 scoreless innings allowing a hit while striking out two. Anderson has not allowed a run in his last five appearances, totaling 9.1 innings
