INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Gwinnett Stripers, on the strength of a four-run top of the first inning, beat the Indianapolis Indians by a 4-1 score Sunday afternoon in a game shortened to five innings because of rain at Victory Field.

Matt Wisler (W, 1-1) pitched a 5.0-inning complete game for the Stripers, allowing one run on six hits while striking out three.

The four-run outburst by Gwinnett came against Indianapolis starting pitcher Clay Holmes. With one out in the first, Rio Ruiz laid down a bunt single and moved to second base on a two-out walk by Carlos Franco. Xavier Avery then crushed a double to center, scoring Ruiz from second and Franco from first for a 2-0 lead. Tyler Smith followed with a single to left, scoring Avery to raise the lead to 3-0. Chris Stewart then drilled a triple to right, plating Smith to make it 4-0.

The only Indianapolis run against Wisler came in the bottom of the fourth. Jose Osuna double to left-center, moved to third on a single to left by Jordan Luplow and scored when Jacob Stallings grounded out to third.

Holmes (L, 1-2) settled down after the top of the first but still was tagged with the loss. He tossed 5.0 innings with four hits, four earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

At the plate for Gwinnett, Avery was 1-for-2 with a two-run double, and Stewart was 1-for-2 with an RBI triple. For the Indians, Luplow was 2-for-2.

The Gwinnett Stripers (11-17) return to Coolray Field on Monday to begin a seven-game homestand with the opener of a four-game series against the Charlotte Knights. First pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Gwinnett starter has yet to be announced, while Charlotte will start left-hander Matt Tomshaw (1-0, 8.10 ERA). Dave Lezotte has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 6:35 p.m.
