From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off Rex Brothers to earn a 4-2 comeback win over Gwinnett last night. Jose Osuna leveled the game at 2-2 with an RBI double and later scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk by Ryan Lavarnway. Christopher Bostick then tacked on another run with a 6-4-5 double play that ended the inning, but Jordan Luplow touched home before the tag was applied for the final out at third base. Johnny Hellweg worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save. Gwinnett led 1-0 after three, but an Erich Weiss RBI single in the fourth evened the score. Carlos Franco hit a run-scoring single in the top half of the eighth, but the Stripers' 2-1 advantage was short-lived thanks to Indy's final spurt at the dish. Tyler Eppler tossed six innings and allowed just one run for the Tribe.
GAMES DECIDED LATE: All three games in the current Indy-Gwinnett series have been decided in the eighth inning or later. Indy won the opener, 3-2, on a two-out, two-run, walk-off double by Erich Weiss in the bottom of the ninth Thursday night. Gwinnett then scored two runs in the eighth on Friday to take a 4-3 win, and the Tribe responded with a three-run eighth last night to earn -- at the minimum -- a series split with a 4-2 triumph.
TOUGH AS CLAY AT THE VIC: Today's starting pitcher, Clay Holmes, is 7-3 with a 2.48 ERA (22 ER/80.0 IP) in 17 games (16 starts) all-time at Victory Field. He has yet to allow a run in nine innings at home this year, spanning two starts. Entering play today, Holmes' scoreless streak at The Vic is 21.0 innings dating back to a two-run third inning on Aug. 8, 2017 against Buffalo. He's tossed 19.0 shutout frames in his last four home starts combined, allowing a total of six hits.
OFFENSE CLICKING: Indy's offense ranks among the International League's best in terms of overall production. The Tribe rank first in average (.267), doubles (69) and triples (12), third in slugging percentage (.412) and fewest strikeouts (192), and fourth in hits (227).
RALLY DE MAYO: Indy's overall record on May 5 since 1996 is now 10-11 after last night's comeback win. The 4-2 outcome snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tribe on Cinco de Mayo and was their first win over the Braves' Triple-A affiliate in two all-time meetings on the date.
RIGHT AT HOME: Tyler Eppler enjoyed the friendly confines of Victory Field again last night, throwing six innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits, walked one and fanned five batters in a no decision. In 17 games (14 starts) all-time at The Vic, Eppler is 8-1 with a 2.27 ERA (23 ER/91.0 IP) and .236 batting average against (82-for-348).
OSUNA EN FUEGO: This past week, Tribe third baseman/outfielder Jose Osuna was named as both the Indians and International League April Player of the Month. The 25-year-old hasn't missed a beat in May, batting .333 (5-for-15) with two doubles and two RBI in five games. He ranks among IL offensive leaders in slugging percentage (1st, .618), doubles (T-1st, 11), extra-base hits (T-1st, 14), batting average (4th, .355) and RBI (T-4th, 18).
BY THE NUMBERS - .984: The Indians own a .984 fielding percentage 26 games into the season, tied for the third-best mark in the IL. Indy committed eight errors through its first five games; they've had just seven errors over the last 21 games.
