Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Three times the WhiteWings held a lead against San Angelo Colts, and all three times they allowed the Colts to come back.
With a 13-12 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, and closer Edgar Martinez brought out to the mound with runners on first and second and two outs, allowed a two RBI double from Danny Hernandez. It was the third time that night the 'Wings lost the lead and it ultimately led to their third straight loss.
Dropping to 15-13 on the year, the WhiteWings drop from first place for the first time all year while San Angelo, who moves to 16-12, take over sole possession of first place.
The WhiteWings raced out to an early 3-0 lead courtesy of an RBI double by Leivi Ventura and an RBI groundout from Gerardo Avila.
Despite the early lead in the first half inning, San Angelo would come back with a vengeance as they responded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning against starting pitcher Andrew Wells. After Wells allowed five earned runs in .2 innings, manager Eddie Dennis pulled his starting pitcher.
Danny Rondon would come on in relief to close out the first inning, but the Colts would knock in six runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 6-3 lead.
Despite a combined nine runs in the first inning, the offensive fireworks were only getting started.
In the top of the third, the 'Wings would chip away at the three run deficit as Gerardo Avila knocked in a two-run homerun over the left-field wall to cut the deficit to one as they trailed just 6-5.
Using a huge fifth inning, the WhiteWings would retake the lead after posting seven runs to take a 12-6 lead. Three consecutive homeruns from David Peralta, Leivi Ventura and then Avila gave the 'Wings the lead at 8-6.
An RBI single from Brandon Decker provided the 'Wings a 9-6 lead, but a three-run blast over the right field wall from Francisco Santana gave the visitors a definitive 12-6 lead.
One half inning later, and the WhiteWings were on their heels once again as the Colts responded with four runs to cut the lead to 12-10 thanks to an RBI single by Danny Hernandez and a bases clearing double by Cory Patton.
Despite still holding a 12-10 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the WhiteWings surrendered the lead yet again as a two-run homerun off the bat of Davis Page against relief pitcher Mickey Cassidy tied the game up at 12-12.
Still, the WhiteWings grabbed back the lead in their very next at-bat as an RBI single from Decker allowed the 'Wings to take a 13-12 lead.
Setup man Julio Santana would take the mound to start the bottom of the eighth inning and after allowing two baserunners, was pulled to allow Martinez, the league leader in saves, the chance to close it out.
Hernandez's two RBI double would give the Colts the lead at 14-13 and another RBI single from Mark Ramos made it 15-13.
The WhiteWings take on San Angelo on Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Chase Davenport is expected to take the mound for the 'Wings.
