Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Foster Field had been a house of horrors for WhiteWings' starting pitching. Through five games at San Angelo, the starting pitching staff had surrendered 28 earned runs in just 10.2 innings. After giving up first place in the standings for the first time all year, the 'Wings were searching for a quality start from one of their starters to put them back in the win column.
On Saturday night, starter Chase Davenport gave the WhiteWings just that - an outstanding starting pitching performance. Going six innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits, Davenport allowed the 'Wings to pick up their first win of the year at Foster Field.
Overall, the WhiteWings move to 16-13 on the year and are tied for first place in the South Division standings with San Angelo, who also move to 16-13.
The 'Wings would grab a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a Wilmer Pino RBI infield single.
Tacking on four more runs in the top of the fourth inning allowed the WhiteWings some breathing room as they took a 5-1 lead. Pino started the scoring off with a two-run shot over the left field wall and two batters later, Decker followed suit as he belted his first professional homerun over the left field fence.
Pino, who already had three RBI's, helped the 'Wings blow things wide open in the top of the fifth inning. With two runners on base, Pino took a fastball over the left field fence for his second homerun of the night and his sixth RBI. The three-run blast gave the 'Wings an 8-1 cushion.
With Davenport providing solid pitching, the 'Wings were able to cruise all the way to the seventh inning with a 9-2 lead.
A big four run seventh inning put the game well out of reach for San Angelo as the 'Wings would go up 13-2. Gerardo Avila knocked in a two-run homerun while Wes Dimitt and Francisco Santana provided RBI's of their own.
The WhiteWings bullpen would allow six earned runs to cross the plate in the final three innings, but thanks to the huge lead and Davenport's outstanding pitching performance, it wouldn't matter.
The battle for first place continues tomorrow night at 7:05 PM as Eddie Dennis Jr. is expected to make his first professional start.
