Wings blanked by Indians in series opener

June 13, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Sean Burnett combined with two other pitchers for a shutout and Carlos Maldonado's home run was the key hit as the Indianapolis Indians beat the Red Wings 2-0 Tuesday night at Frontier Field, in the opener of a four-game series between first place ballclubs. Jason Miller struck out four in five innings of two-hit ball for the Red Wings.

Left-handed starters Miller and Burnett took quick turns through their opponents lineups in the first four innings. Miller, making a spot start out of the bullpen, allowed just one hit over four innings and struck out three. Burnett (5-5), Pittsburgh's top pick in the 2000 draft, missed the entire 2005 season after left elbow surgery. His comeback continued Tuesday as he worked around three Rochester hits to blank the Wings after four, notching five strikeouts.

Maldonado led off the fifth against Miller (1-1) by running the count to 3-2, then drilling a home run over the left field wall, giving the Indians a 1-0 lead. It was the first baserunner Miller allowed since a second inning single; he finished with five innings pitched, two hits and one run allowed with four strikeouts.

Ricky Barrett took over in the sixth for the Wings. After retiring the first batter he faced, a single and a double brought in the second run for the Indians. Barrett walked two in the inning loading the bases, but got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly ball. Kevin Cameron pitched the seventh inning for Rochester, but allowed two baserunners in the eighth and was replaced by Henry Bonilla.

The Red Wings out-hit the Indians 6-5. Shawn Wooten and Glenn Williams each had a pair of hits for Rochester. Jonah Bayliss picked up his 10th save for the Indians.
