TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the first of 12 meetings with the Bats, the first of six at The Diamond. Game one of an eight game homestand. The Braves were 8-4 vs. the Bats last season, 3-3 at The Diamond.. This is the 16th of 48 games vs. West Division opponents, Richmond is 8-7 vs. the West Division. The ninth of 24 home games vs. West Division opponents (Richmond is 5-3). The Braves are 56-61 all- time vs. Louisville. The Braves are third in the South, 19.5 and a half games behind first place Charlotte. The Bats are third in the West, four games off the lead.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Braves 8-6 Monday at McCoy Stadium. The Red Sox blew the game open with five runs in the third inning and held off late Braves rallies to sweep the four game series. Pawtucket scored a run in the first on an RBI ground ball by Gabe Kapler. The Braves tied the game in the third on Brayan Pena's sacrifice fly. In the home half Dustan Mohr drew a bases loaded walk to put the Sox ahead to stay. Enrique Wilson followed that with a grand slam to give the Sox a 6-1 lead. RBI singles from Jonathan Schuerholz and Jamal Strong cut the Sox lead to 6-3 in the fourth. Alejandro Machado chased a run home with a ground ball in the fourth to make it 7-3. The Sox added one more run in the fifth on an RBI single by Kapler. In the eighth Cesar Crespo knocked in two runs with a single to cut the Sox lead to three. In the ninth Scott Thorman's RBI single made the score 8-6. Marc Deschenes earned the win. Brad Baker notched a save. Ricardo Rodriguez took the loss. Scott Thorman equaled a club season high with four hits. Dustin Pedroia had three hits for Pawtucket.
STORMIN' THORMAN: Scott Thorman had the Braves second four hit game of the season last night. Thorman is third in the league in hitting (.326). He is second in home runs (14). He is tied four fourth in RBI (41). He has the IL lead in hits (79). Thorman is third in slugging percentage (.574). He is tied for second in the IL in extra base hits with 30. Thorman has hits in 13 of his last 14 games. His recently ended 11 game hitting streak is the club's longest of the season. Thorman is hitting .458 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 12 June games. He has seven hits in his last nine at bats.
CRUNCHING NUMBERS: Bill McCarthy has hits in 13 straight starts. Martin Prado has hits in five straight games (9-21 .429). Braves pitchers are 5-18 at the plate (.278) with an RBI and SB. Braves pinch hitters are 2-16 (.125). The Braves have not faced a National League affiliate since May 21. They just finished a stretch of 20 straight games vs. AL clubs.
LEAGUE LEADERS: The Braves are second in the IL in extra inning games played (11). That equals their total for all of last season. The Braves are second in the IL in stolen base percentage behind Charlotte. They have swiped 47 and have been caught 15 times (75.8%). Their 15 caught stealings is tied for the fewest in the IL with Louisville. The Braves four wins when trailing after eight innings is tops in the International League. The Braves seven shutouts is tied for third in the IL. The Braves are fourth in fielding percentage. Richmond is last in the IL in ERA.
AS THE ROSTER TURNS: RHP Phil Stockman has been promoted to Atlanta. He has worked his last 18 innings in nine appearances without allowing a run while permitting just four hits. For the year Stockman was 0-0 0.91 in 16 games. He is the 12th R-Brave called up to Atlanta this season. RHP Anthony Lerew has been activated from the DL. Two Braves are currently on the Disabled List: 3B Wes Timmons (hitting .316 when he fractured a thumb May 16), and 2B Martin Prado (hitting .429 when he pulled a hamstring last Sunday).
