ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Left-hander Sean Burnett fired five scoreless innings, while catcher Carlos Maldonado belted a fifth-inning homer as Indianapolis blanked Rochester, 2-0, Tuesday evening at Frontier Field.

The Indians improve to 35-29 overall and 20-10 on the road, while the Red Wings fall to 40-25 overall and 20-12 at home. Indianapolis remains three games ahead of Toledo in the International League's West Division, while Rochester remains five games ahead of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the IL North.

Burnett (5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO) earned the win, improving to 5-5 overall. He now owns a 4-0 record and 1.46 ERA in five starts on the road this season.

RHP Matt Whiteside (2.1 IP, 1 H) and RHP Jonah Bayliss (1.2 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO) combined for four scoreless innings of relief as Indianapolis posted its eighth shutout of 2006. Whiteside picked up his second hold of the season, while Bayliss notched his team-leading 10th save.

Maldonado gave Indianapolis the only run it would need in the fifth when he launched a solo dinger to left -- his fourth of the campaign.

The Indians added an insurance run in the sixth when CF Rajai Davis beat out an infield single and came around to score on a two-out double by LF Mike Edwards.

Edwards paced Indianapolis, going 2-for-4 in the contest. 1B Chris Richard added a 1-for-4 effort and has now reached base safely in 28 straight games.

C Shawn Wooten and 1B Glenn Williams collected two hits apiece for Rochester. Only two Red Wings reached scoring position the entire night with no runner advancing past second base.

Rochester LHP Jason Miller (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 1-1.

Indianapolis improves to 28-2 on the season when leading after seven innings and 31-2 when holding an advantage after eight frames. The Indians, who lead the league in fielding percentage, also turned in their 38 errorless game of 2006.

The two teams return to Frontier Field Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. LHP Tom Gorzelanny is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while RHP J.D. Durbin is expected to get the nod for Rochester.
