Bisons' Sowers Named IL Player of the Month

June 13, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Buffalo Bisons pitcher Jeremy Sowers has been named the Topps-International League Player-of-the-Month for May 2006 as selected by IL field managers. The left-handed starter was undefeated in six May starts, posting a 4-0 record and a 0.88ERA in 41.0 innings of work.

Sowers, 23, was almost un-hittable in just his second full month at the Triple-A level. He began by earning a victory on May 3 in Scranton/WB by only allowing one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Sowers then worked into the 9th inning for the first time in his career as he was masterful against Ottawa on May 8 in Buffalo (8.1IP, 6H, 1R, 1ER, 3K). The earned run allowed in that start was a 4th-inning home run from Alejandro Freire. Sowers wouldn't give up his next earned run until 29.0 innings later. That stretch included a complete-game, one-hit shutout against Pawtucket in the first game of a doubleheader on May 19 (7.0IP, 1H, 1BB, 3K) and eight shutout innings of three-hit ball against Toledo on May 24 (8.0IP, 3H, 1BB, 5K).

On the season, Sowers is 7-1 with a 1.37ERA (85.1IP, 72H, 18R, 13ER, 26BB, 48K). He currently ranks second in the International League in ERA and innings pitched and tied for third in wins.

Sowers was the Cleveland Indians 1st round pick (6th overall) off the 2004 First-Year Player Draft. Last season, he earned the Bob Feller Award as the Tribe's Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year after going a combined 14-4 with a 2.37ERA in 27 starts with Single-A Kinston, Double-A Akron and the Bisons. He struck out 149 and walked just 29 batters in 159.1 innings. His 2.37ERA was seventh lowest in all of Minor League Baseball.
