Wingnuts Rally Again; Eke Past T-Bones

June 7, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kans.- The Wichita Wingnuts faced a late deficit for the second straight day, but once again rallied late to take a 7-6 win over the Kansas City T-Bones Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark to claim their first series win of 2016.

Trailing 6-4 in the eighth, the Wingnuts (8-11) started their rally with a lead-off walk from one of their newest members, Martin Medina. Dustin Geiger followed with a single, and Richard Prigatano drew a walk to load the bases. Harrison Kain brought Wichita within a run with a fielder's choice, and then Leo Vargas tied it with an RBI single, giving him three hits and three RBIs for the night.

In the ninth, Zack Cox drew a walk to get things started, then moved all the way to third when Evan DeLuca (0-1) uncorked a pair of wild pitches. On a 3-0 count, Brent Clevlen drove a fly ball to center that was plenty deep enough to score Cox, giving the Wingnuts the lead.

After stranding the potential go-ahead run at third in the eighth, Frankie Reed (2-1) had a much easier time with the T-Bones (8-12) in the ninth, retiring the side in order to end it and give Wichita their first series win of the season.

Kansas City opened the scoring, plating three in the first. Wichita answered right back in the next half inning, as Kain singled in a run, and Vargas hit a two-run homer for the second straight game to tie the game at three apiece.

The visitors grabbed their first lead of the night in the next half inning as Clevlen homered for the second straight night, a solo shot to make it 4-3.

The lead did not last long however, as the T-Bones scored twice in the home half of the frame and added another in the fourth to take a two-run lead.

Wichita's bullpen was strong yet again, as the combination of Kevin Osaki and Reed combined to work four scoreless innings to keep the Wingnuts within striking distance.

The Wingnuts will go for a sweep of the T-Bones as the two conclude their series Wednesday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Wichita will send veteran right-hander Jon Link (2-2, 5.32) to the mound, while the T-Bones will counter with fellow righty Casey Barnes (1-2, 78). First pitch is slated for 11:05 a.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
