Wichita Wingnuts News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts trailed 5-1 heading into the top of the ninth but turned things around with a four-run frame to tie it before beating the Kansas City T-Bones 7-5 in 14 innings Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Things looked bleak for Wichita (7-11) heading into the final frame, trailing by four and not having picked up a hit since the first inning. With one out, Brent Dean hit a line drive off of Kansas City reliever Aaron Baker who overthrew to first base, allowing Dean to take second. The next man up, Leo Vargas, belted a two-run homer to left, his first long ball as a pro, to make it 5-3.

Christian Stringer followed with a single, extending his hitting streak to 12 in a row, the longest by a Wingnut this year. After a fielder's choice for the second out, Wichita was down to its final out with Brent Clevlen coming to the plate. The veteran hit a towering two-run shot to left, tying the game and sending it into extras.

Neither team had much in the way of threats in the first few extra frames. The Wingnuts loaded the bases in the 10th but failed to convert, and Kansas City (8-11) put together back-to-back two-out singles in the 11th, only to see Frankie Reed, who tossed three scoreless frames, get the next T-Bone batter to bounce out to end the threat.

With the game still tied entering the 14th, T.J. Mittelstaedt got the ball rolling for Wichita, greeting new reliever Jeremy Strawn (0-1) with a double to right-center. After a fielder's choice failed to get Mittelstaedt advancing to third, Richard Prigatano finally broke the deadlock with a two-run triple.

Jesse Pratt (1-0) gave up a one-out single in the bottom of the inning, but got the next two T-Bones to lock down the comeback win for the Wingnuts. The rookie righty threw three scoreless innings on the night, and collected his first professional win.

Wichita scored first, as Dustin Geiger scored Mittelstaedt on a base hit with two down in the first. The lead did not last long however, as Kansas City pulled ahead with two in the second. The home team then added one in the fifth and two in the eighth to build their 5-1 advantage.
