Saints Losing Skid Hits Four in 11-8 Loss to AirHogs

AMARILLO, TX - The state of Texas is currently being unkind to the St. Paul Saints. After losing the final two games in Laredo the Saints have lost the first two in Amarillo and have their first four game losing skid since 2014 dropping an 11-8 contest to the Texas AirHogs on Tuesday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium.

The Saints dug an early 5-0 hole in the first inning and could never get back over the hump. The AirHogs sent nine men to the plate and the first five men reached. Saints starter Alec Crawford walked leadoff man Michael Hur. A single by Juan Sanchez and then Burt Reynolds was hit by a pitch loaded the bases. Austin Gallagher made it 1-0 with an RBI single. Devon Rodriguez doubled home two to make it 3-0. KJ Alexander made it 4-0 with an RBI groundout and with two outs Brian Bistagne knocked home a run with a single to make it 5-0.

The Saints got on the board in the fourth when Nate Hanson was hit by a pitch and, with two outs, Tony Thomas doubled home Hanson to make it 5-1. Thomas extended his hitting streak to 19 games, tying Willie Cabrera for the sixth longest hitting streak in franchise history. Mike Gilamrtin followed with an RBI double to make it 5-2.

The AirHogs responded in the bottom of the inning against Crawford as Bistagne led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. With one out Hue singled and that was followed by a Sanchez three-run homer, his third of the season, to make it 8-2. Reynolds walked, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Rodriguez to make it 9-2. Crawford lasted 4.0 innings allowing nine runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two.

In the sixth the Saints tried to mount a comeback as Angelo Songco led off with an opposite field solo homer to left, his fourth of the season, to make it 9-3. Thomas singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single by Tanner Vavra to make it 9-4.

Saints reliever Cody Wheeler kept the Saints in it by throwing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief allowing two hits and striking out two. It allowed the Saints to get within three in the seventh.

Alonzo Harris led off with a double and that brought up Breland Almadova. He hit a sinking fly ball down the right field line that Cody Lenahan dove for and missed and the ball rolled into foul territory. Almadova raced around the bases and beat a throw to the plate for an inside the park two-run homer, his second home run of the season, to make it 9-6. It was the closest the Saints would get as the AirHogs would score two in the eighth with the Saints answering with two of their own in the ninth.

The same two teams meet Wednesday night in the finale of the three game series at 7:05 p.m. at Potter County Memorial Stadium. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (4-0, 2.20) to the mound against AirHogs RHP Matt Shepherd (0-2, 3.48). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
