Wichita Wingnuts News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Wichita Wingnuts (10-5) defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries (5-11) 7-5 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday night.

Wichita overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win their fifth consecutive game, and clinch their third ever series win at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth, C.J. Ziegler lined a single to left leading off. Canaries' starter Jordan Whatcott then walked the next three batters in a row to force home Wichita's first run. David Amberson cut the lead to 3-2 with an RBI groundout to second base.

John Alonso hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Canaries' lead to 4-2, but Wichita took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the sixth. With first and second and one out, Amberson crushed a double to deep left-center field that scored Abel Nieves to make it 4-3 Sioux Falls. After Austin Brough relieved Whatcott, Derek Perren scampered home with the tying run on a wild pitch. With Amberson now on third base, Jared McDonald put the Wingnuts in front with a sacrifice fly to shallow right field in which Amberson slid home ahead of Anthony Trajano's throw.

Jake Kahaulelio tripled to center leading off the top of the eighth and eventually scored the Wingnuts' sixth run when he crossed the plate before Sioux Falls completed an inning-ending, reverse-force double play on a groundball to first hit by Cole Armstrong.

Abel Nieves homered to right-center leading off the top of the eighth to make it 7-4. The Canaries pulled within two runs on a two-out, RBI single to right from Tim Pahuta in the bottom of the inning before Lincoln Holdzkom retired Jake Taylor to strand the tying runs on base.

Josh Dew threw a perfect bottom of the ninth to earn his third save of the year.

Jon Link earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Link struck out seven and did not issue a walk.

Whatcott took the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in five and one-third innings. Whatcott walked four and struck out five.

Sioux Falls scored three runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to right from Pahuta and a two-out, two-run home run to right-center by Taylor.

John Rodriguez's 10-game hitting streak came to an end. Kahaulelio and Ziegler each extended their hitting streaks to seven games.
