Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox earn their second home win of the season in a 11-4 victory over Grand Prairie at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The ballpark hosted 3,210 fans to see the Sox snap their five-game losing skid in a game that last three hours and nine minutes.
Amarillo's offense picked up the slack, going for fifteen hits in a game which both teams had all batters reach base. After Grand Prairie took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second, the Airhogs would lose that lead in the bottom of the inning.
The Sox would single five times in the second, with two of their three runs in the inning coming from a fielding error by Airhogs' shortstop, Yasutsugu Nishimoto. Chris Valencia drove in the third run to make it 3-1 going into the third. Grand Prairie came back with a run after Brandon Jones dropped an infield pop-up with the bases loaded. He would get the third out of the inning on the same play.
David Peralta swung at the first pitch of the bottom of the third and tripled down the right field line. He would score on a Joe Weik double and then a Cory Patton single added another. Patton would score on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 6-2 after three. But in the fifth, the Airhogs would leadoff with a pair of doubles by Brian Myrow and Andres Rodriguez, which made it 6-4 by the middle of the inning.
The home half of the fifth featured another Weik double, followed by a walk and an RBI double by Jones off relief pitcher, Derrick Miramontes. And then the next batter, KC Serna made it 9-4 with his two-RBI double. Two of the three runs in the inning were charged to Airhog starter, James Adkins, who failed to record an out after facing just two batters in the fifth. The Sox were not done piling on the runs because in the sixth inning, Chris Grossman and Peralta went for back-to-back doubles, leading to a Patton sacrifice fly to make the score 11-4.
The Sox offense would shell Miramontes for three runs on four hits with a walk in his two innings of relief. Jakob Cunningham pitched the seventh and eighth for the Airhogs and gave up no runs, no hits, recording a strikeout. Amarillo's bullpen used Joe Testa in one inning of work, giving up no run on no hits while walking two and striking out one. Josh Giles debuted at home in the seventh and allowed no runs on two hits. And finally, Chris Holguin, on his first day with the organization, went the final two innings, allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out four while keeping his ERA at 0.00 on the year.
Ryan Mitchell (W, 1-2) pitched five innings, allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. James Adkins (L, 1-1) went four innings for the Airhogs and allowed eight runs, five earned on eleven hits while walking three and striking out one. Although the Sox committed four errors, the Airhogs left fourteen runners on base in the game.
With the win, the Sox improve to 5-10, while the Airhogs drop to 5-8 on the season. Sunday, the Sox host Grand Prairie in the deciding game of the three-game series. The battle is set to begin at 6:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show at 5:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
