Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The Wichita Wingnuts used big 7th and 8th innings to rally and beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats at US Steel Yard. The Wingnuts (29-16) started sluggish in the rain-delayed game but exploded late to beat the RailCats (25-21).

The bullpens were the difference in the game for both teams. The Wingnuts' starter, Garrett Gould, only went two innings while RailCats' starter Conrad Wozniak lasted 5.2. However, the Wichita bullpen only allowed two RailCat runs while the RailCats' pen gave up seven.

Wozniak performed well in his home debut. The rookie missed a quality start by one out in his five-hit outing. Most impressive for Wozniak were the strikeouts. The righty fanned seven Wingnuts and only walked two.

Wichita jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning but the Cats claimed the lead in the 4th. Tillman Pugh led off with a single and Frank Martinez followed with a double. Jeremy Hamilton knocked in the first RailCat run with a sacrifice fly. Next, Jose Gonzalez hit a shallow fly ball that fell in right field and scored Martinez.

The RailCats threatened again in the 6th after hits by Pugh and Martinez. Then, Hamilton hit into a 6-4-3 double play and Gonzalez grounded out to end the inning.

The Wingnuts found their offense in the next half inning. Wichita scored two runs off of reliever Santiago Rodriguez on two hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

Pete Rose Jr.'s squad broke the game open in the 8th inning. The Wingnuts piled up five runs on five hits off of Taylor Black to put the game out of reach.

Frank Martinez had two hits for the RailCats, the only batter with multiple hits. Brennen Metzger went 0-3 to end his 15 game on-base streak. Wozniak did not factor in the decision in his first game at US Steel Yard.

The RailCats try to even the series tomorrow night against the Wingnuts. First pitch is at 7:10 PM and coverage begins at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
