Wichita Wingnuts News Release

GARY, Ind. (July 7, 2016) - The Wichita Wingnuts trailed by a run entering the seventh, but scored seven in the seventh and eighth innings combined to rally and beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 8-2 Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard, and extend their winning streak to a season-high seven in a row.

After rain delayed the start of Thursday's game by an hour and 19 minutes, the Wingnuts (29-16) opened the scoring four batters into the contest. Brent Clevlen doubled with two outs, and then scored on an RBI single by T.J. Mittelstaedt.

The 1-0 lead held until the fourth. The RailCats (25-21) greeted Jesse Pratt (3-1) in that inning with a single and a double, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. A sacrifice fly by Jeremy Hamilton tied the game, and then Gary went in front on an RBI single by Jose Gonzalez.

Wichita stranded a runner in scoring position in three straight innings from the fourth through the sixth before finally breaking through again in the seventh. Christian Stringer started the inning by drawing a walk from Santiago Rodriguez (3-3), moved to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Zack Cox single. A couple of batters later, Cox scored from third on a Matt Chavez sacrifice fly.

The Wingnuts then broke it open with a five-run eighth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out for Stringer, who brought home the first run of the frame by drawing another walk. Cox then drove in a pair with a single, giving him three RBIs for the night. Clevlen and Chavez then each drove in another with singles of their own to push the margin to six.

Starter Garrett Gould left after two innings for Wichita, forcing the Wingnuts to get seven from their bullpen. Pratt went a career-high four, tying his career-high with three strikeouts as he collected his third win.

Behind Pratt, the trio of Chase Johnson, Seth Harvey, and Fabian Roman threw a scoreless inning each to lock down the Wingnuts seventh straight victory, a new season-high.

The Wingnuts and RailCats continue their four-game series Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Right-hander Eddie Medina (1-3, 6.41) will start on the hill for Wichita, while Gary will counter with fellow righty Charle Rosario (5-3, 2.66). First pitch is set for 7:10, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
