Texas AirHogs News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The AirHogs took Game 2 of their 4-game set vs. the Laredo Lemurs 9-4 Friday in Amarillo. Starter Sam Martin scattered 5 hits and allowed just 2 runs in earning his 3rd win of the season. Out to avenge a 15-6 loss Thursday, the AirHogs got out to an early lead against Laredo starter Barret Loux. The team tagged the righty for 6 hits and 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 5-0. Austin Gallagher, Michael Valadez, and Juan Sanchez all had RBI extra-base hits to highlight the explosive frame.
Martin faced the minimum in the 3rd and 4th before allowing 2 runs but also stranding 3 base runners in the 5th and 6th. The Lemurs used an RBI single by Drew Martinez to score another tally off Tyler Ihrig in the 7th. An 8th inning home run by Denis Phipps off Carlos Misell cut the AirHogs' lead to just 5-4.
In the bottom of the 8th though, the offense returned to form. Michael Hur led off the frame with a single against reliever Kamakani Usui. Juan Sanchez then doubled to the left field wall to make it 2 in scoring position. Brian Bistagne was intentionally walked to load the bases with still no one out.
Devon Rodriguez and Nick Akins then followed with RBI base hits against Laredo's 2nd reliever, Jeff Inman. Cody Lenahan and Austin Gallagher followed with RBI sacrifice flies to center to run the score to 9-4. Alan Oaks fired a scoreless top of the 9th to seal the win.
Loux, a former 6th overall pick in the MLB draft, suffered his 1st American Association loss, while Martin picked up his 3rd win of 2016. The AirHogs (20-28) and the Lemurs (27-21) go at it again tomorrow at 6:05 pm. RHP Matt Shepherd is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. LHP Joe Testa for Laredo.
