Explorers Fall In Kansas City Opener

Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers lose their fourth in a row, falling to the T-Bones with a 7-5 score at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

In the first inning, Kansas City recorded the first run of the contest. Brett Wiley lined a single to left field, scoring two runs and jumping to the early 2-0 lead.

Sioux City answered with three runs in the second. Tommy Mendonca worked up a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a base-hit, moved to third off a single, and scored on a 6-3 groundout by Brendan Slattery. On the next at-bat, Derrick Robinson knocked in two runs with an RBI single to take the 3-2 lead.

In the top half of the third, Sioux City added another run. X's third baseman Tommy Mendonca smashed a two-out solo-shot, to extend their lead further.

Kansas City's offense exploded in the third inning, racking up four big runs to take the lead. T-Bones second baseman Brett Wiley plated two runs with an RBI triple. Kansas City tacked on two more with a two-run single by Brian Erie, taking the 6-4 lead.

Both squads added one more run on the night. T-Bones scored their final run in the fifth, and the Explorers chalked up one more run in the sixth, making it 7-5 Kansas City.

T-Bones right-hander Jared Messer (3-0) received the victory on the night, allowing four runs in five innings, while recording three strikeouts. Kansas City's closer Mark Haynes (s-9) got the save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

X's starter Bryan Escanio (2-2) was charged with the loss, giving up six runs in only three innings pitched.
