Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Wichita Wingnuts (30-16) totaled 12 hits to hold off a valiant effort by the Gary SouthShore RailCats (25-22) to win 11-9.
The back-and-forth affair featured four home runs, including a grand slam by Jarred Mederos. The four-run homer was the first grand slam for the RailCats on the season and put the team ahead 8-5 in the 6th inning.
The RailCats' bullpen was unable to hold the lead and gave up three runs in the top of the 7th. The Cats struck back by manufacturing a run in the bottom of the 8th to bring the score to 10-9. The Wingnuts added an insurance run in the 9th off a Matt Chavez home run. The RailCats got two runners on in the bottom of the 9th but couldn't complete a comeback.
Charle Rosario struggled after getting the start for the Cats. He lasted just four innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs. Andy Roberts came on in relief to limit the damage in the 5th inning. He ended up getting knocked around two innings later for two runs on two hits.
Travis McGee was charged with the loss for the RailCats after going 1.1 innings and giving up three runs on two hits and three walks. Jorge de Leon pitched part of the 8th and finished the game out in the 9th. He surrendered a run on two hits and a walk.
Zach Cox had a huge game for the Wingnuts for the third night in a row. He was 3-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. He started the scoring off in the 1st inning with a solo home run.
The RailCats also got a home run from Frank Martinez, his sixth of the year and second as a RailCat. Brennan Metzger contributed with a triple and a run scored.
The offense emerged from their slumber to score nine runs, but the bullpen could not hold a lead for the second night in a row. The RailCats were 16-0 when leading after six innings going into this series, but are now 16-2 in that category.
The RailCats look to strike back in the four game series and slow down the streaking Wingnuts tomorrow night. First pitch is at 6:10 PM and coverage begins at 5:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
