Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Bernardino, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers took on a decidedly Major League look in a 3-1 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm at San Manuel Stadium on Wednesday. The Sixers got four strong innings from LA Angels' southpaw CJ Wilson and a triple from infielder Cliff Pennington as the duo appeared on MLB injury rehab assignments. The pair helped the Sixers down Lake Elsinore for the first time in five tries this season.

Lake Elsinore (21-26) got a run in the first against Wilson when 18-year-old Luis Urias slapped a ball inside the bag at first and down the right field line for a double. After back-to-back strikeouts, Luis Tejada flared a double down the same line to score Urias and give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Wilson would allow no more runs. The two-time American League All-Star went four innings allowing the one run on five hits with no walks and five Ks on 56 pitches.

Inland Empire (16-31) tied the game in the fourth against Storm starter Dinelson Lamet. Hutton Moyer doubled and came home on Caleb Adams' RBI single to make it 1-1. That was the lone run allowed by Lamet in 6IP. He gave up four hits and a walk while fanning three and has now surrendered just one run with 10 Ks in 12 innings against IE this year.

The 66ers took the lead against former 2001 San Bernardino Stampede lefty Matt Thornton (0-1) in the seventh. Zach Houchins singled to open the frame against Thornton, who is on a MLB injury rehab of his own for the Padres. Michael Strentz then followed with a triple to the gap in right-center to give the Sixers a 2-1 lead. Strentz now has four triples on the campaign. Jeff Boehm then tallied a sac-fly to bring in Strentz and make it 3-1.

That score would hold up as Alex Klonowski was tremendous out of the pen for the Sixers. The Kearney, MO native came in relief on what was his normally scheduled day in the rotation. The accommodation to the big leaguer Wilson made little difference to Klonowski who went five shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out five to improve to 3-6 on the year. Catcher Taylor Ward was 2-for-2 in throwing out baserunners on the night.

The series concludes Thursday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
