Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Ethan Elias turned in seven innings of one-run baseball and the Visalia Rawhide (29-17) evened the three-game series with the San Jose Giants (27-17) on Wednesday night at Rawhide Ballpark with a 3-2 win to reclaim sole possession of first place in the North Division.
Elias (3-3, 5.18) held the San Jose ballclub, who had won seven of eight, off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh inning when C Ty Ross hit a solo home run over the right field wall into the Pasture which made it a 3-1 contest in favor of Visalia.
Otherwise Elias allowed two hits in an inning twice and spread out the other three hits over three different frames, never allowing the Giants to string together multiple hits throughout an inning. It was Elias's longest outing of the season and he tied his professional career high with the seven frames. He allowed seven hits and walked one while striking out two. He did hit two batters as well in the win.
The Rawhide took an early lead against LHP D.J. Snelten (2-4, 4.14), who pitched well enough to win in most cases, going six innings and giving up 10 hits, only three runs on two walks and he struck out six in the tough luck loss.
Snelten, in that first inning gave up a single to CF Colin Bray with one out. Bray then swiped second and scored on 3B Marty Herum's ground ball roller into left field for the 1-0 lead.
In the third Herum struck again with a two-out double before 1B Rudy Flores smacked a two-out RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
The odd inning scoring continued in the fifth for Visalia after LF Chuck Taylor walked. Bray sacrificed him to second base and Herum picked up his third hit of the night with a single, moving Taylor to third. 2B Domingo Leyba knocked in Taylor with another two-out RBI single for the 3-0 lead.
San Jose threatened in the ninth against RHP Bud Jeter (SV 4) after RHP Luis Ramirez battled through a scoreless eighth inning, walking two. RF Christian Paulino doubled in the ninth and with two outs 2B Brandon Bednar drove him in to cut the lead to 3-2 but Jeter induced a C.J Hinojosa fly out to centerfield to close out the tight win.
Visalia is now 14-6 in one-run ballgames and reclaimed their 1.0 game lead over San Jose in the division.
Herum paced the offense going three-for-four with a double and an RBI his seventh multi-hit game in 16 games for the Rawhide.
RHP Taylor Clarke (0-1, 3.50) will pitch for the Rawhide tomorrow night in game three against RHP Jordan Johnson (5-2, 2.85) for the Giants. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. first pitch and it's a Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark.
