Stockton Ports News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - After scoring nine runs in a losing effort on Tuesday night, the Stockton Ports stormed out to a 16-0 lead and all but assured themselves of a win on Wednesday at The Hangar. The Ports plated 16 runs over the first five innings on their way to a 16-7 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks to snap a four-game skid and even their three-game series at a game apiece.

Stockton got out and running right away as Richie Martin, the Oakland A's first-round pick from 2015, opened the game with a home run to left field, his first hit since joining Stockton's roster on Monday. Two batters later, James Harris singled and scored on an ensuing double by Seth Brown, who reached third on an error and scored on a groundout by Joe Bennie to give the Ports a 3-0 advantage after one inning.

Mikey White led off the second with a double and scored on a Martin infield single with one out to make it a 4-0 lead. The Ports started really pulling away in the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out, a wild pitch enabled Harris to score from third. With one out, White drew a walk to reload the bases and Iolana Akau drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 6-0 lead and chase JetHawks starter Elieser Hernandez (1-4) from the ballgame. Yeyfrey Del Rosario came on in relief and surrendered a two-run single to Melvin Mercedes and a two-out RBI double to Jose Brizuela to make it a 9-0 contest.

Hernandez suffered the loss, going two-and-a-third innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out one.

Matt Bower came on to pitch the fifth inning for the JetHawks and didn't survive the frame. With two on and one out, Brizuela came to bat and hit a three-run homer. Later in the inning, with two on and two out, Sandber Pimentel launched another three-run homer to right to make it a 15-0 score. Bower was lifted from the game in favor of Ryan Thompson, who surrendered a home run to Mikey White, his first of the season, to make it 16-0.

Bower allowed six runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning of work. Thompson went on to pitch three-and-a-third innings and allowed just the home run to White.

Ports starter Daniel Gossett (4-1) retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced to begin his start. He surrendered his first run in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Garrett Stubbs. Gossett recorded the first out of the seventh and then saw Drew Ferguson hit an inside-the-park home run to right on a play where the right fielder Brown crashed into the fence attempting to make a catch. After three straight singles, Gossett was lifted for Ryan Gorton, who allowed two of his three inherited baserunners to score on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout.

Gossett earned the win, going 6.1 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five.

Gorton went on to allow three runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Ferguson and a two-out, two-run double by Jason Martin to make it a 16-7 contest. Gorton was lifted for Carlos Navas, who recorded the final out of the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.

The Ports and JetHawks play the rubber match of their three-game series on Thursday night at The Hangar. Brett Graves (2-4, 4.10 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Rogelio Armenteros (2-1, 2.82 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PDT.
