Ports Hit Four Home Runs to Dock 'Hawks

LANCASTER, Calif. - The Stockton Ports hit four home runs to jump out to a huge early lead and evened the series with a 16-7 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday night at The Hangar.

Richie Martin hit the first of the four homers for Stockton to open the game, his first of the season in just his second game. The Ports added two more runs in the first and one in the second on an RBI single by Martin.

In the third inning, the Ports scored five runs and knocked out JetHawks starter Elieser Hernandez (1-4). Melvin Mercedes delivered a two-run single and Jose Brizuela had an RBI double.

Brizuela hit his second homer in as many nights to highlight a seven-run fifth for Stockton. It was one of two three-run blasts and three home runs overall in the frame. Sanber Pimentel and Mikey White went back-to-back. It was White's first home run of the season.

Nine of the 10 hits for the JetHawks came in the final four innings. Garrett Stubbs brought home the first run of the game for Lancaster with an RBI double.

In the seventh, Lancaster scored three times, the first coming on an inside-the-park home run by Drew Ferguson. They added three more in the eighth. Jason Martin had a two-run double and now has four RBI in the first two games of the series.

Daniel Gossett (4-1) retired 16 of the first 18 batters he faced to earn the win for Stockton. He walked one and struck out five. JetHawks catcher Richard Gonzalez tossed an inning of scoreless relief. He induced a ground ball double play to end the top of the ninth.

The JetHawks (20-24) and Ports (19-27) continue their three-game series tomorrow night at The Hangar. Rogelio Armenteros (2-1) will start for Lancaster against Brett Graves (2-4). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
