Wilmington Rolls Over Boscan, Pelicans

May 21, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WILMINGTON, DE - For the second straight night, a Blue Rocks starter stymied Myrtle Beach's bats, and behind Jake Odorizzi's six and two-thirds innings of one-run ball, Wilmington's offense broke out early in a 9-3 win over the Pelicans at Frawley Stadium.

Unlike Friday's series opener of this three-game set when it took until the eighth for the Blue Rocks to break free of a deadlock and put the Pelicans away, Saturday's offense came early and often for the home side against Myrtle Beach starter Wilfredo Boscan. The first five men to the plate against the Birds' right-hander all reached, and the first three of those scored to stake Odorizzi to more run support than he would need on the night.

Boscan (0-2) labored through just four and a third innings in his second start in a Pelicans uniform, allowing three more runs on nine total hits before his day ended in the fifth. The righty struggled with command, walking four against two strikeouts and getting hit hard when he put pitches in the zone. Five of Wilmington's nine hits against him went for extra bases.

Wilmington's Odorizzi, the top prospect acquired by the Royals from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Zack Greinke, kept the Pelicans off-balance all night. The righty erased three consecutive leadoff singles by Pelicans batters from the fourth through the sixth with subsequent double plays, and the Pelicans only put multiple baserunners on against Odorizzi (4-0) in the second, when they scored their only run against him, and the seventh, when his day came to an end. The 2008 first rounder struck out three and walked one while picking up the win.

The Blue Rocks added three runs, two earned, against reliever Chad Bell in one inning of relief before Zach Osborne and Johan Yan kept Wilmington off the board the rest of the way. Myrtle Beach could only add two more runs on the night against Blue Rocks lefty Glenn Gibson in the eighth. Jared Hoying hit his fourth home run of the season for the Pelicans in the loss.

Sunday afternoon, the Pelicans look to avoid the series sweep when they send righty Joe Wieland (4-2, 1.62), the Carolina League's ERA leader against left-hander Noel Arguelles (2-1, 2.43) with first pitch for the finale set for 1:35 p.m.

After a Monday off, the Birds return home to the Grand Strand for the first of six with the Salem Red Sox and Wilmington Blue Rocks on May 24. Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field Box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
