Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LARGE SAMPLE SIZE: Friday night's series opener turned into The Tyler Sample Show as Wilmington's starter dominated the Pelicans with the exception of a four-batter spell in the second inning. After Mike Olt's solo homer drew the Pelicans even at 1-1 in the second, Mitch Hilligoss doubled, Zach Zaneski singled, and David Paisano gave Myrtle Beach the lead with a sacrifice fly. Aside from those four hitters, only two men reached base on the night, Jared Hoying with a leadoff walk in the first and Olt with another leading off the fourth. Hoying was doubled off on Leury Garcia's 6-4-3 twin-killing one batter later. Outside of the second, Sample faced just one over the minimum in his other seven innings of work.
C-OLT SHOULDER: The month of May has been the valley to Pelicans third baseman Mike Olt's April peak. In his blowback to a red-hot start, in which he batted .317 with three homers, 16 runs batted in, and a .961 OPS while taking Rangers' Player of the Month honors, Olt has struggled to the tune of a .218 average and .780 OPS in May. The UCONN product has still found ways to be productive, though, homering more times (four) in five fewer games so far in the season's second month. Olt is also the rare cleanup hitter who is leading the league in walks with 26 free passes, eleven of those coming in May.
LEADING THE PACK: The Pelicans have scored the most runs in the Carolina League (194) and allowed the fewest (134). That gives them the best run differential in the circuit (+60). The Birds lead the league in batting average at .260 and their .338 on-base percentage is 10 points ahead of the next-highest club, Frederick. On the mound, the Pelicans are the tops in ERA (2.96) and opponent batting average (.222). Myrtle Beach is the best in the field as well with a .981 fielding percentage by making only 29 errors, well ahead of Frederick who has made the second-fewest with 35.
