Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 21, 2011) - Winston-Salem was held to a season-low three hits in a 4-0 loss to Salem in game two of the series Saturday night. The Dash dropped their fifth game of the home stand in front of a sell-out crowd of 6,382 at BB&T Ballpark
Salem (23-17) got on the board first in the second inning. Shannon Wilkerson led off with a double and then was sacrificed to third by Zach Gentile. Michael Almanzar followed with a run-scoring single to put the Red Sox up 1-0.
Derrik Gibson led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on Dash starter Joe Serafin's throwing error on a pick-off attempt. Gibson moved to third after Peter Hissey grounded out to second, and scored on Kolbrin Vitek's sacrifice fly. The next batter, Bryce Brentz, then hit his first home run in the Carolina League. Brentz was called up from low-A Greenville where he led the South Atlantic League in home runs and RBI.
Offense was hard to come by for Winston-Salem (18-24). The Dash managed a hit in each of the first two innings, but after Nick Ciolli's second-inning single, Sox starter Pete Ruiz retired ten straight Dash hiters before walking Jason Bour in the sixth. Austin Yount followed Bour's walk with a single, but Daniel Wagner then hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Red Sox added another run in the ninth with two outs. Reliever Brandon Kloess set down the first two batters he faced before giving up a triple to Gibson. Hissey then doubled to score Gibson and put the Sox up 4-0.
Serafin (0-3) got the loss after six innings where he allowed three runs. The quality start was the tenth in 12 games for Dash starters. Pete Ruiz (2-2) earned the win after six scoreless innings.
Notes:
The sell-out at BB&T Ballpark was the sixth of the season.
