Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats showed heart Saturday night, twice battling back from seven-run deficits, however, in the end they couldn't muster enough offense to pick up the win, falling to the Potomac Nationals, 13-8.
Potomac took an early lead in the second inning. With runners on first and second, Lynchburg starter Zeke Spruill struck out Justino Cuevas. However, the pitch hit the dirt and catcher Jace Whitmer had trouble finding the ball. Steven Souza, who was on second, was running on the pitch, and when the throw down to first base was too late to get Cuevas at first, Souza rounded third and scored.
The Nationals hot-hitting from the past few nights continued in the third inning. Six hits, including four doubles, brought home five runs. The Nationals added another in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. All seven runs were earned and credited to Spruill (2-5).
Despite the deficit, the Hillcats fought back in the middle innings. Four runs came across the plate with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Todd Cunningham drove in the first run with an RBI single, Andrelton Simmons followed by knocking in two with a single of his own. With Simmons on base, Phil Gosselin tripled off the wall in center to bring him home and cut the lead to 7-4.
LV Ware came with another big two-out hit for the Hillcats in the sixth inning. With runners on first and second, Ware doubled home both runners, cutting the lead to one.
That was as close as the Hillcats would get. The Nationals scored six unanswered runs over the last three innings to take a 13-6 lead.
However, the scrappy Hillcats wouldn't go down quietly. Lynchburg scored two more two-out runs in the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back RBI doubles by Joey Terdoslavich and Joe Leonard. They couldn't cut the lead all the way, and lost 13-8.
Potomac starter Trevor Holder got the win to move to 2-5 on the year. The Hillcats lost their fifth straight to fall to 14-26, and the Nationals improved to 18-23.
The series finale against Potomac will be played Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm. Righty Cory Rasmus (0-5) is scheduled to take the mound for the Hillcats, while the Nationals will send out righty Paul Demny (1-3). Gates open at 1:00.
If you can't make it to the game, the Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 1:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
