Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Wilmington Blue Rocks took on the Aberdeen IronBirds in the last game of the first half of the season, with the Blue Rocks winning by a score of 4-2.
It was a pitching duel between Bryan Caceres for Wilmington and Jackson Baumeister for Aberdeen. Caceres had the better day between the two starters, pitching five scoreless innings.
It took the Blue Rocks a while to get anything going against the Aberdeen starter, but they struck first in the bottom of the fifth inning. It all started after Jeremy De La Rosa walked and Gavin Dugas got the team's first hit of the game. Maxwell Romero Jr. bunted to get both runners in scoring position. Johnathon Thomas then hit a bloop single into right field to give Wilmington the first run of the ball game. Elijah Nunez followed that up with a sacrifice fly into right field that scored Dugas from third, making it a 2-0 ball game.
Wilmington followed up that inning with another two runs in the bottom of the sixth. It all started with De La Rosa once again, this time hitting a home run into center field. Gavin Dugas got hit by a pitch in the next at-bat. Romero Jr. double-scored Dugas from first, extending the Blue Rocks' lead to 4-0.
Aberdeen answered back in the top of the seventh with a run of their own. With two outs, Carter Young hit a single, and Douglas Hodo III walked. Maxwell Costes drove in Young with a single between the second baseman and shortstop, bringing the score closer at 4-1.
The IronBirds were able to plate one more run in the top of the eighth when Enrique Bradfield Jr. walked. After an error on a pickoff attempt, Bradfield Jr. reached third safely. A sacrifice fly from Reed Trimble got the score to 4-2.
The bullpen trio of Richard Guasch, Wander Arias, and Matt Cronin combined for four innings, six strikeouts, two hits, two runs, and two walks.
This was the last game of the first half for both teams. They will both begin the second half tomorrow at Frawley Stadium.
