
Willie Abreu's Single, Double and Home Run Not Enough for Yard Goats in Binghamton

Binghamton, NY - Yard Goats outfielder Willie Abreu had a single, double and solo home run, but it was not enough in a 4-1 loss to the Rumble Ponies on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, New York. Rumble Ponies starter Cole Gordon struck out ten batters for the second straight game as part of a five-inning effort, and extended his scoreless innings streak to 17 straight while earning his second win. Gordon allowed just one hit and struck out seven of the first nine batters faced. The Yard Goats won the first two games on Tuesday and Wednesday but Binghamton has taken the last two contests.
The Rumble Ponies scored the first run of the game in the first inning off Hartford starting pitcher Cole Gordon. Jake Mangum led off with a single and later scored on a one-out hit by Brett Baty, giving Binghamton a 1-0 lead.
Binghamton starter Cole Gordon struck out the side in the first inning and went on to fan seven of the first nine batters. The Yard Goats got their first hit in the fourth inning, a two-out double by Willie Abreu. The right-hander retired the side in order in the fifth inning while also recording his 10th strikeout.
The Rumble Ponies added a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Edgardo Fermin started the rally with a double and scored on a single by Luis Carpio, giving the Ponies a 2-0 lead. The third run scored on a double play grounder by Baty. The Mets affiliate extended the lead to 4-0 on Quin Brody's RBI single in the fourth.
The Yard Goats made it a 4-1 game on a solo homer by Willie Abreu in the seventh. Abreu led off the inning with a liner over the right center field fence, his sixth home run of the season. Hartford had the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning but Colin Holderman got a strikeout to end the threat.
The Yard Goats continue their 12-game road trip on Saturday night (6:35 PM) in Binghamton, New York against the Rumble Ponies.
