Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Jackson Williams made the Fresno Grizzlies walk-off winners with a pinch-hit RBI single in the 12th inning in a 5-4 decision against the Tucson Padres on Wednesday at Chukchansi Park.
After Johnny Monell led off the bottom of the 12th with a triple, the Padres elected to intentionally walk back-to-back batters to load the bases. With five infielders and two outfielders, Williams drove a ball just short of the left field wall and into a wasteland of outfield grass to plate Monell for the game-winning run.
The victory improved Fresno's record to 5-3 in extra-inning games this season. It was also their second walk-off win of 2013.
The 4 hour, 21 minute game was forced to extras when Tucson scored a combined three runs over the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 4-4. In the sixth, Grizzlies starting pitcher Mitch Lively walked Rene Rivera with the bases loaded to score the first run. Mike Wilson followed with a ground ball single off Grizzlies reliever Steve Edlefsen into right field to make the game 4-3. Kalian Sams' force out off Dan Runzler scored Dean Anna to tie the game.
Runzler had the lone blip for the Fresno bullpen, allowing the run by Anna. Four Grizzlies relievers combined to throw 6 1/3 innings of one-run baseball. Heath Hembree and Mason Tobin each tossed two shutout innings, with Tobin earning the winning decision.
Tucson reliever Jorge Reyes did not record an out to the four batters he faced in the 12th inning to suffer the loss. The right-hander surrendered the one run over two-plus innings.
The Grizzlies and Padres swapped home runs in the second inning, with Monell's homer for Fresno to lead off the second giving Fresno a 2-1 lead. Monell fell a double shy of the cycle in his three-hit effort.
Gary Brown recorded a double for the fourth straight game with an RBI two-base hit in the second inning. Brown finished the game 1-for-6.
Cole Gillespie went had two RBI singles for Fresno, one in the first and the other in the fourth.
Carter Jurica matched Monell's game-high three hits with two singles and a double.
Fresno starting pitcher Mitch Lively allowed just two hits over 5 2/3 innings, including the second-inning homer to Cody Decker. Lively struck out five and walked six in the no-decision.
The Grizzlies and Padres will meet for the final time in 2013 with the series finale at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Chris Heston of Fresno will face fellow righty Burch Smith.
