Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: The RedHawks and Iowa Cubs conclude their current four-game series at 7:05 p.m. as the RedHawks will seek a split. The RedHawks have not lost a series to the I-Cubs in Oklahoma City since July 31-Aug. 2, 2010.
Last Game: Brian Bogusevic hit two-run home runs in both the second and seventh innings to lead the Iowa Cubs in a 5-1 win against the RedHawks Wednesday night. It was the first multi-homer game of the season for the former RedHawk. Iowa led 4-0 before Jose Martinez helped the RedHawks avoid a shutout and singled to score Andy Simunic in the bottom of the eighth inning. Iowa added their final run in the top of the ninth inning when J.C. Boscan grounded into fielder's choice and Junior Lake scored. The I-Cubs outhit the RedHawks 9-7, and all of Oklahoma City's hits were singles. Iowa starting pitcher Chris Rusin (5-6) pitched seven shutout innings in the win, allowing five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. RedHawks starter Brett Oberholtzer (4-5) took the loss. He allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Brad Peacock will make his first start since returning to the RedHawks...Peacock spent the last two weeks with the Astros, appearing in three games as a relief pitcher after being recalled from OKC May 28. In this most recent stint with Houston, Peacock made three appearances and allowed three runs over seven innings while holding opponents to a .200 batting average. His last game was Saturday in Kansas City when he held the Royals to one run and two hits over 3.1 innings...Peacock is 1-2 with the RedHawks after starting four games in May. He has struck out 27 batters over 21.2 innings and has held PCL opponents to a .220 batting average...Coincidentally his last outing with the RedHawks was against Iowa on May 24 at Principal Park. He allowed four runs with two outs in the first inning but proceeded to retire 15 of the final 17 batters he faced in the loss.
Against the I-Cubs: 2013: 3-8 2012: 12-4 All-time: 100-115 In OKC: 54-51
Dating back to last season, the I-Cubs have won three of the last four meetings in Oklahoma City. They had lost 11 straight as well as 15 of 16 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark until the recent run...Overall Iowa has won eight of the first 11 meetings of 2013 after winning just four games against the RedHawks in all of 2012...Brett Wallace is batting .342 with four home runs, eight RBI and a .457 on-base percentage...The I-Cubs have hit 15 home runs. Former RedHawk Brian Bogusevic is hitting .429 with a .545 on-base percentage...Six of 11 games have been decided by one run, including four of the last six...OKC went a combined 22-10 against Iowa in 2011 and 2012...After not winning any of its previous six series against the RedHawks, the I-Cubs have won the first two series between the teams this year.
To the Max: Astros outfielder Justin Maxwell is set to make his first appearance during his rehab assignment tonight. Maxwell has been on the Disabled List with a fractured left hand since April 24 after being hit by a pitch. He began his rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi, going 1-for-21 over six games. Maxwell had a brief three-game stint with the RedHawks on a rehab assignment last season. He was also one of three players to visit OKC this past winter during the annual Houston Astros CAREavan.
Runnin' RedHawks of OKC: The RedHawks stole two bases last night to bring their league-leading season total to 87 -- 21 more than Albuquerque, the next-closest team. The total also is the highest in all of Triple-A. Jonathan Villar leads the league with 22 swipes this season. His total is tied for third-most in all of Triple-A.
Singles Club: All seven of the RedHawks hits yesterday were singles. It marked the third time in six games they did not have an extra-base hit. Although the team is seventh in the PCL in batting average (.274), they rank 14th in extra-base hits (168).
Booming Brett: After a 1-for-12 series in Omaha, Brett Wallace has gone 6-for-11 with a two-run homer through the first three games of the homestand. Wallace has 15 hits in the last 10 games. He leads the RedHawks with a .317 batting average and is tied with Marc Krauss for the team lead in both home runs (9) and multi-RBI games (9). He has 32 RBI this season and trails Krauss by just one for the team lead.
Andy Answers: Andy Simunic has hit safely in each of his last six games, going 8-for-21 (.381). He tied a season-high with three RBI in Tuesday's win.
Crushing Cubs: Iowa has hit 15 home runs in 11 games against the RedHawks this season. The six home runs the I-Cubs have hit this series is tied for the most the RedHawks have allowed in one series this year and is the most homers they have surrendered in any three-game stretch. Iowa has homered at least once in 10 of the 11 contests, including the last nine straight. It's fairly surprising since the RedHawks have only allowed 37 home runs in their other 52 games this season.
Alive in the Eighth: It should come as no surprise the RedHawks lone run last night scored in the eighth inning: It's their highest-scoring inning this season (40 runs).
Double Play Dearth: Yesterday the RedHawks turned their first double play in seven games. Even with the recent drought, they still rank third in the league with 69 double plays turned this season.
Final Exam: Oklahoma City is 11-5 overall in series finales, including 7-0 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. They lost the finales of their two most recent series, both of which were on the road.
