Tucson Padres News Release
Jackson Williams' game-winning hit in the 12th inning helped the Fresno Grizzlies to a 5-4 win over the Tucson Padres Wednesday at Chukchansi Park. The Padres are now 4-2 in extra inning contests this season.
Cole Gillespie gave the Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning. The Padres tied the game in the second when Cody Decker blasted a home run past left field, hitting a bridal store outside of the ballpark. Johnny Monell answered back in the bottom of the second with a home run to center, putting Fresno back in the lead. Gary Brown brought home the second run of the inning with an RBI double. The Grizzlies tacked on a run in the fourth on another RBI single from Gillespie.
Tucson scored two runs in the sixth on Rene Rivera's bases-loaded walk and Mike Wilson's RBI single to cut Fresno's lead to one. Kalian Sams evened the score at 4-4 in the seventh by hitting into fielder's choice allowing Dean Anna to come across for the tying run. The Padres had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth with Gregorio Petit on third with no outs, but Heath Hembree was able to work out of the jam and keep the game tied. Monell led off the bottom of the 12th with a triple to right and later scored on Williams' walk-off single.
Mason Tobin (2-0) earned the win for the Grizzlies, pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Jorge Reyes (4-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering the game-winning hit the 12th. Tucson starter Anthony Bass went five innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits. Wednesday's was the second 12-inning game of the season for the Padres, their longest games by innings of the year.
