Wilfredo, Wings Rally for Win

April 30, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Wilfredo Tovar drove in three runs with a pair of clutch hits, leading the Red Wings to a 7-5 comeback win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Saturday afternoon at Frontier Field.

The series concludes Sunday at 1:35 p.m., for a Knot Hole Kids' Club game, and kids can run the bases with Spikes and Mittsy after the game. Complete promotions details below....

Red Wings left-hander Andrew Albers made his first start since signing a minor league deal with the Twins last week. Albers, an All-Star with the Wings in 2013, got a rude welcome from the first two RailRiders - as Ben Gamel and Aaron Judge each hit solo homers for an early 2-0 Scranton lead.

The RailRiders went ahead 3-0 after a third inning sacrifice fly, and the Red Wings countered against Scranton starter Richard Bleier in their half of the third inning. Stephen Wickens walked, stole second, and scored when right fielder Cesar Puello misplayed a ball hit by Byron Buxton.

Albers continued to work around trouble, putting runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings but not allowing a run to score.

The Wings chased Bleier and took the lead in the fifth inning. A double from Darin Mastroianni and Juan Centeno's single opened the frame. That prompted a bullpen call, and James Pazos entering the game for Bleier. Pazos got an out, then walked Buxton before Tovar laced a double down the left field line. Centeno and Buxton scored on the hit, giving the Red Wings 4-3 lead.

Albers allowed a pair of one-out hits in the top of the sixth, and was replaced by Marcus Walden. The RailRiders scored twice to re-take the lead, taking advantage of a wild pitch by Walden and an infield hit.

In his Rochester return, Albers worked 5.1 innings and allowed nine hits, five earned runs, and a walk. He did not strike out a batter, and threw 80 pitches, 50 for strikes.

The Red Wings loaded the bases with one out against Pazos in the bottom of the sixth, and Vinnie Pestano came in to pitch for the RailRiders. Pestano fanned Wickens for the second out, then struck out Buxton to get out of the jam.

Pestano used the strikeout to end another Wings scoring bid, stranding two on with two out in the seventh inning when he fanned Adam Brett Walker.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Wings put two on with one out against Pestano, and Conor Mullee relieved Pestano and faced the top of the Wings' lineup. Mullee struck out Buxton, but Tovar delivered another clutch hit - this time, an RBI single that tied the game 5-5. Kennys Vargas dropped a single into left field to score two more runs, putting the Wings ahead 7-5.

Brandon Kintzler pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Wings, allowing a pair of singles. Buddy Boshers worked the ninth inning and faced the top of the RailRiders' order; Boshers struck out the side to pick up his first save of the season, and first save since 2013.

NOTES: Saturday's attendance of 6,918 included a record 3,127 participants in the City of Rochester's Clean Sweep program...The RailRiders out-hit the Red Wings 13-9....The Wings win ties the season series at 3-3, with 10 games left to play...Kennys Vargas' bases loaded hit makes the Wings 5-for-14 (.357).
