Wildcatters top Lynx in shootout
January 23, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Former Lynx Terry Marchant scored twice in the second period to help pace the Texas Wildcatters past the Augusta Lynx in a shootout 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Ford Arena in Beaumont, Texas.
Augusta kicked off the scoring in the game when Louis Goulet took a pass from Ken Magowan in front of the Wildcatters net for an even strength marker to make it 1-0 Lynx. Jamie Johnson also picked up an assist on the goal at 8:37 of the opening frame. The Lynx would also utilize their only power play of the period to open up a two goal lead when Sean Connolly tipped home a Lawne Snyder shot at 13:08, and Magowan picked up his second assist of the night on the goal as well. Jason Saal made several key saves in the first, turning aside all 12 shots faced for Augusta.
In the second, the Lynx again capitalized on the power play as Goulet notched his second of the contest to make it 3-0 from Magowan and Eric Johansson at the 4:30 mark. Texas would rally, however, scoring three times in the period with goals from Mark Gianetti and a pair from Marchant to tie the game at 3-3 through 40 minutes of play.
No scoring in the third period led to overtime and eventually the shootout, where Texas came in 0-6 prior to this game. It seemed that the momentum built from Saturday's win carried over with the Wildcatters, and they were able to defeat the Lynx in five rounds to earn their first back-to-back wins of the season. Saal ended the game with 44 saves through the overtime and three of four in the shootout. Phil Osaer earned his second consecutive victory with 32 saves in the game and all five in the shootout.
Augusta will now break for the All-Star Game to be held in Reading, PA on Wednesday, January 26th. Ken Magowan will be the team's representative on the American Conference squad, with faceoff slated for 7:05 pm. The next Lynx game action will be this Friday and Saturday with back-to-back matches in Pensacola against the Ice Pilots, followed by a Tuesday game in Ft.Myers against the Florida Everblades. Augusta's next home game will be Friday, February 4th against the Everblades at 7:35 pm.
