Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC â The Bear Mountain Arena was hopping on Friday as 2931 fans packed the joint to see the second game of three against the Alaska Aces. The Aces beat the Salmon Kings 3-0.
The Salmon Kings came out in the first period skating and hitting the Aces hard, and for the first twenty minutes Alaska looked as if they were hearing footsteps. The Aces were less concerned with taking the pass than they were with getting driven through the boards, something the Salmon Kings did well in the opening stanza.
But in the second Victoria relaxed on the hitting and Alaska slowly gained more momentum. The score was knotted at zero until the 13:52 of the middle frame when Mike Lee took a pass and showed he can do more with his hands than throw punches, beating Salmon Kings goalie Kelly Shields glove side.
Joe Talbot scored the Aces second goal with just over a minute left in the period from Kimbi Daniels. The game could have been a far rougher affair after the antics of the opener on Friday, but both teams stuck to playing hockey instead of chasing each other around looking for fights.
At 7:48 of the third, Cal Benazic scored his second in two games, Talbot got into the play and finished the game with a goal and an assist and Scott Gomez notched the other helper.
Alaska out shot the Salmon Kings 24-20 in the game and Peter Aubry goes into the history books recording the first shut out against the Salmon Kings in their inaugural year.
The rubber match goes Sunday afternoon at Bear Mountain Arena, game time is 1:00 p.m. PST. The Salmon Kings invite their fans to an after game family skate with the players. Please bring your skates as there are no rental facilities on site. The skate will be on a first come first served basis. Only 400 spots are available for the skate and admission is by donation to Kids Sport and the BC Games.
Tickets for Sunday's game are available at the arena beginning at 12:00 p.m. PST or on-line at www.selectyourtickets.com.
